My Current Skin Regimen

My skin care/lightening routine is very simple these days. It isn't as elaborate as it was a couple of years ago, but I am constantly in a state of evolving, tweaking or adding new things to it. So this may become a monthly post on here, since it's a work in a progress. I am definitley seeing results with this, and my skin is clearer and healthier than it's been in a long time.

A little background information:

Skin Tone: Medium Olive (cool skinned though, with pink undertones)

Goals: Completley fade some freckles on my upper cheekbones as well as my decollette area. Make face and neck the same shade as the rest of my body (which is a light olive skin tone).

Current Results: I've gotten about 1/2 shade lighter overall with this routine, and my freckles and sun damage are slowly diminishing. I'm really liking this routine.

NOTE: I don't wear foundation, concealer or powder. I find those really aggravate my acne. Instead I just use blotting papers throughout the day as needed to remove shine.

Depending on the day, or how my skin 'feels' I tend to change things up. I don't follow a set-in stone skin routine, but on average these are the products that I use:

AM:
- Cleanse with Marcelle Gentle Foaming Wash (Canadian Exclusive brand)
- Rinse off cleanser, and then spray multiple times with La Roche Posay Thermal Water (not for lightening, it has anti-free radical damage properties, and calms down redness).
- Pat dry with a towel
- Apply Vichy Bi-White Reveal Whitening Essence over face and neck
*wait 15 minutes*
- Apply Sofina Perfect UV SPF 50 over face and neck
- Throughout the day, if my T-zone gets oily I will blot with Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Papers

PM: *I take a shower at night...so in the shower I cleanse my face, neck and body like this:*
- Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil (to remove sunscreen, and eye makeup)
- Rinse off cleansing oil with Marcelle Gentle Foaming Wash
- Use DDF Brightening Cleanser with Luffa over entire body (concentrate on decollete area). Let is absorb for 3 minutes before rinsing off
- Once out of the shower, spray face with La Roche Posay Thermal Water
- Pat dry with towel
- Apply DHC Acerola 100 on decollete, knees and elbows
- Apply Nivea Firming Body Lotion (w/ CoQ10) on the rest of my body
*wait 10 minutes*
- Apply a pea sized amount of Retin-A Gel 0.001% over face
- Apply La Roche Posay Toleraine Fluid only on dry spots (chin)
- Phytomer Soothing Eye Gel around eyes

Once A Week: Niacinamide Lightening Mask (mondays) in the morning after cleansing and Vitamin C Lightening Paper Sheet Mask (friday mornings). Sunday nights I use Makeupartistchoice Lactic Acid Peel. I follow up with Vichy Bi White.

Other Products I Use: I still have some Skinceuticals Phyto + and I like to mix that with my Retin-A gel. Really makes my skin look glowey in the morning. In the summer time I like to use
Belli Pregnancy Acne Cleanser (7% Lactic Acid) or Aveeno Ultra Calming Foaming Cleanser as my facial cleanser. Sometimes, I like to use my DHC Acerola 100 underneath my sunscreen during the day instead of the Vichy Bi White. I like to alternate.

Hi Bency,

For a beginner like yourself, I would recommend using the lowest strength of any retinoid (but still would suggest a prescription retinoid or Avene over a retinol any day).

If you plan on getting a prescription for Retin-A gel (the cream version has a comedogenic base, don't get that one), the lowest strength is 0.0025%. Request for that one, most doctors/derms prescribe that anyway if that know you don't have experience with retinoids.

If you are thinking about starting out with OTC retinoids, Avene Retrinal is good. Their lowest strength is 0.025%. Avene Diacneal is also good as well.

Phyto + is quite suitable for all skin types. I have very oily skin and I don't break out from Phyto+ at all. =)

what do u reccomend for dark under eue circles?

I made a blog post on Dark under eye circles:

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/10/dark-circles.html

Check that out, there's some info in there that might be useful to you.

I read somewhere that Vitamin K can lighten dark circles.I know Neostrata makes a dark eye fading eye cream with Vitamin K.

You can also use a skin lightener around your eyes, but just make sure to go over that or mix it with an eye cream since regular face products can be drying for the eye area. Eye creams are basic moisturizers that don't irritate the eye area, using the two can balance each other out.

I put my C seruma and sunscreen on my eye area during the day. No problems. At night, I don't put my retinoid around my eye area. I might put a little Phyto + underneath and then go over with my Phytomer Soothing Eye Gel (by dabbing a little). I don't have dark under eye circles so I haven't done extensive research on it, but most of the time, sunscreen, using an eye cream (many people believe they are irrelevant but they actually are designed for under eye skin and are very soothing), and maybe a lightener around can improve the look.

If you are genetically disposed to having them, meaning your parents have them, then that is probably the only thing you can do to prevent them from going any darker. It's more than just a melanin issue with dark circles, it's a blood capillary and skin density issue. =)

The first thing you need is a sunscreen. Sunscreen is the best preventative for further sun damage, and skin darkening. It will also help your dark marks for getting any darker and can lighten them to an extent, since it allows the skin to regenerate itself.

Some good sunscreens out there are: Vichy Captial Soleil Ultra Fluid SPF 20, Neutrogena Antioxidant Age Reverse SPF 20 (good for dry skin), RoC High Protection SPF 60 Spray, Hawaiian Tropics Oil-Free Faces SPF 30, Banana Boat Dri-Block SPF 30, Olay White Radiance SPF 30 (ordered online, looks pretty good).

Those are just a handful. I usually prefer Japanese sunscreens but those are quite matifying and can be drying for your skin type.

The next thing is either a Vitamin C serum or skin lightener. I would go with a C serum, you can use underneath your sunscreen in the daytime for optimal effects.

I have several posts about the best Vitamin C products out there, and also a DIY one if you are on a tight budget:

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/11/picking-right-vitamin-c-serum.html

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/12/vitamin-c-serums-for-half-price.html

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/06/make-your-own-vitamin-c-serum.html

For dry skin, the C serums I would say are ideal are: SkinMedica Vitamin C Complex, MyChelle's Perfect C Serum, La Roche Posay Active C, Cosmetic Skin Solutions C+E Ferulic, DHC Acerola 100, Kiehl's Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate

Retin-A (prescription) is not a necessity at first. Especially if you are novice to retinoid use, I usually recommend people to start out with OTC retinoids like Avene Diacneal or Avene Retrinal (lowest strength) before stepping into prescription strength retinoids.

The key is to have some sort of exfoliant every day that does not irritate. So...you can also use an AHA product if you feel you aren't ready for retinoids yet. AHA products are great epidermal exfoliators. You can try Alpha Hydrox products, DDF Holistic Lighteners, Skin Biology LacSal serum, Oleda Super Skin Lightening Gel, Neostrata AHA products etc.

There are a lot of great AHA products out there. Whether you use AHA products or retinoids or both mixed together, you should be using those at night since those make skin sun sensitive and honestly just work better (well in the case of retinoids, the sun actually degrades them so it's useless to wear in the daytime).

For a weekly mask that can give a lighter, more even appearence try Makeupartistschoice.com's Pumpkin exfoliating mask. Aloette Enzyme Peel is great too. I also have blogged about my own Vitamin C at home mask and Niacinamide mask. I use those from time to time and they REALLY give me a luminous, even, clear look.

I hope I helped in some way in trying to build/figure out your routine. Finding the right skin routine takes time, and sometimes some trial and error, but once you get it down, the benefits really start coming in. Good luck. <3

what do u think of adding a product for elasticit to my neck area? i m 55 years old i can see the skin getting little looser..... if u have studied any of the products, pls advise on good ones

Treat the skin on your neck like you would your face. That's the best advice I can give. At 55 years old, you can still prevent further damage by wearing a good high SPF/PPD sunscreen everyday on your neck area.

I wouldn't put retinoids on neck skin though since retinoids can really irritate that area. Instead use a high quality hydrating product like the University Medical Face Lift Wrinkle Free. It's a two part product (cream and serum). I've heard very good reviews about it, people saying it tightened up neck skin and made the skin more elastic. Obviously it's not a miracle but it seems worth it.

Sunscreen everyday (with high PPD) and that are your best bet.

whats ur opinion about x-tend life Women's Natural Whitening Day Cream?

January 27, 2010 at 5:27 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Just checked out the X-tend Life Women's Natural Whitening Day Cream and I wouldn't put much thought into it. The only lightening active is Nutgrass Root which is used in many asian lightening products. The melanin inhibiting effects of that are much lower than other botanical extracts like bearberry and mulberry, and antioxidants like L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

Not worth it.

Hi Mileena I would be very grateful for some advice on hard to lighten areas like knuckles, knees, elbows and hands? thank you

Hi,

I wrote an article on that very subject awhile back. Here is the link:

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/11/lightening-knees-knuckles-elbows.html

For your hands, make sure to apply sunscreen there as well (replace your hand cream with that). Lots of sun damage is acquired on the hands just by driving (UVA light travels through windshields).

Exfoliate every, gently though. And apply lighteners in that area. HQ can be used on areas like knees and elbows since those are localized spots, but stick with natural products first. Body lighteners are best since they are most economical. Fair & Flawless and Makari make good ones.

hey Mileena, I love your blog and I'm constantly reading your posts.
I have a question for you, I know this is not the right post fr my question but I really hope you would answer me.
you talked about finding a realistic goal when it comes to skin lightening, my skin now is medium olive skin to begin with
exactly like this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/november1/4699346279/
the girl in the picture is a south korean actress who used to be obviously on the tanner side but years later here she is pretty pale
http://www.flickr.com/photos/november1/4699373165/
do you think that her new skin shade is attainable for me?
i just started my skin whitening journey and i'm gonna work for it, thanks for inspiring me

Hi Neuv,

It's possible. We don't know her skin's history. She could have been born with the latter shade (paler one) and just sun damaged in the first one.

Sunscreen, and skin lighteners and work together to correct many sun damage issues.

Sunscreen's a good place to start. One you feel comfortable wearing daily I have several posts on sunscreen and my fav. ones. Click on the labels on the right for 'sunscreen' to check through.

Once sunscreen is down, you can add in some exfoliant you can use daily like an AHA or BHA product. It doesn't necessarily have to be daily, as long as it is somewhat consistent, so even 3x a week can be good if you use a scrub or peel/microdermabrasion to help slough off dead skin cells to speed up skin renewal.

And lastly ofcourse a skin lightener. There are lots I've recommended - UNT EX White 2, Paul & Joe Whitening Serum, Skinceuticals Phyto +, Makari Day Cream (if you are not acne prone) etc.

Depending on your skin type, choose one and go from there.

Good luck =)

-i use a nevia toner.
-a sunblock with spf 50 that has whitening properties.
- i wait 20 minutes then i apply fairever fairness cream
wait 10 minutes then apply make up.

night:
-remove my make up.

Fairever Fairness is pretty good. I think it's better than Fair & Lovely for sure.

The regimen looks great, the products are gentle so it'll take time but they are all great for your skin so keep at it. ;)
