Making The Best Use of Sunscreen - Inhibiting Melanin

Over at the Bright Skin Forum, I got a lot of questions regarding sunscreen use. A lot of people don't know that most North American sunscreens have very little UVA protection (the rays which stimulate melanocytes). UVA is measured through PPD ratings. UVB is measured by SPF.

PPD stands for Persistent Pigment Darkening. Here is an excerpt from an article:

"The Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method is a method of measuring UVA protection, similar to the SPF method of measuring UVB light protection. Theoretically, a sunscreen with a PPD rating of 10 should allow you to endure 10 times as much UVA as you would without protection."

It's also important to note that certain sunscreens (due to their ingredients) break down easily when exposed to the sun. It's imporant that you find a sunscreen that are stable. It's great to see that Neutrogena, Olay, Hawaiian Tropics, L'oreal and other brands are starting to stabilize their sunscreens (i.e. the whole Helioplex thing Neutrogena advertises). Some makeup products can actually ruin the sunscreen protection as well.

RULE: When wearing a sunscreen with Avobenzone - don't wear foundations that contain uncoated minerals like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide!

I personally use a variety of sunscreens depending on the UV rating. In the morning, I check the news which shows the weather and UV Index. Most days I'll wear the Vichy Capital Soleil Fast Drying Fluid SPF 20 (PPD 8). I don't wear any foundation, just use blotting papers (Clean & Clear) throughout the day to stop shine.

When I know I'll be indoors that day, all day I'll use the Olay Complete SPF 30 Sensitive Skin moisturizer. Has a low PPD (around 5) but then again, I know I'll be indoors. It's a bit greasier but it doesn't break me out.
