Product Review - Makeup Artist's Choice 40% Lactic Acid Peel

Makeupartist's Choice (MUAC) carries fantastic products. They treat a variety of skin conditions, and have a decent skin lightening range. Their lactic acid peels have become somewhat of a hit over the last 4 or 5 years. I've been using the 40% lactic acid peel for almost a year and a half now and I absolutley love it. I personally think it is one of the best at-home peels out there in the market.

Their lactic acid peels come in 3 strengths: 40%, 55%, and 65%. Naturally novices should start out with the 40% and work their way up. I'm content with the 40% peel because I also am a regular user of retinoids (Retin-A) so my skin doesn't need that deep of an exfoliation (as it gets exfoliated regularily). I prefer lactic acid over any other AHA because it is the most gentle and great for sensitive, colored skin. Remember the less irritation you inflict on your skin, the less of a chance for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (further darkening of skin). You can read about my article on post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation here: http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/06/irritation-post-inflammatory.html

The product promises to gently and safely remove dead skin from the epidermis layer of the skin, clean pores, soften lines and have a skin lightening effect due to the licorice extract content. Their is absolutley no down-time when using this peel. However it should be noted that 'first-time' peel users may experience some mild flaking and a peeling effect that maybe similar to in-office chemical peels.

The peel is very easy to use, and the directions are quite concise. I use it at night, so I cleanse my skin with my regular cleanser. Once dry, I apply the pH prep solution and allow that to completley absorb into my skin (around 60 seconds). I then apply the lactic acid peel serum (with my finger tips) over my face and let it remain for the full 7 minutes (beginners should start with just 3 for their first peel). I then rinse very thoroughly with water, then re-applied the pH prep solution over my face and let my skin dry. I follow with my Vichy Bi-White Whitening Essence and eye cream. NOTE: On nights I use the MUAC 40% Lactic Acid Peel, I do not use my Retin-A. Skin is already fully exfoliated at this point.

After using this, my skin is literally glowing and crystal clear. I give credit to this peel for fading many stubborn freckles around my nose and acne scars. I get so many compliments on my skin whenever I use this. And best of all, my skin isn't red or irritated. You can even use this before a big event just to give your skin a refreshed, glowy, bright look. It is great for acne on top of it's skin lightening effect. Great product! I really recommend this one.

OH and just a little tip. If you find that you run out of the pH prep solution really fast, you can just replace that with regular old witch hazel. That can also rebalance the pH of your skin, and can be found in most drugstores.

=)

okay, so i just got this today and my question is when do i apply this? i know it says once or twice a week but when during the day? and in the instructions, the first step, it says " cleanse skin and allow to dry completely." does it mean cleanse skin with the included green tea cleansing bar, right? also, with the 4th step, it says "rinse with soap and water," by soap, are they talking about using the green tea cleansing bar? i'm planning on peeling on sundays and thrusdays. add a little excitement to the most boring days of the week. lol.

Hi!

Preferably it's best to use this at night, right before bed. This is because, the skin can look a little red (especially after the first use). Ideally you should be using this peel twice a week for optimal results.

Cleanse your skin (ideally) with a non-alkaline cleanser (such as the green tea cleansing bar they provide. If you wear makeup, make sure that is removed. You can use your regular faical cleanser, as long as it is not overly drying. Trust me, the first time you use the peel, your skin will become quite dry. So they recommend using their soap before hand.

BTW do not use any manual exfoliator or scrub the same day you use this.

After your skin has been cleansed, and towel dried completley, apply the ph prep solution over your face (with a cotton pad, like you would with a toner). Apply thoroughly and let it dry on your skin. You will find out that the pH prep solution will run out quickly. That's alright, the main ingredient is just witch hazel after awhile, if you run out of the prep solution, you can purchase witch hazel from your local drugstore and use that. Just as good, so don't worry about not using enough of the prep solution.

Next pour a little bit of the lactic acid solution into the palm of your hands and smooth across your face with your fingertips. Use sparingly. For your first time using this, let it sit for no more than 3 minutes! Your skin needs to build tolerance to this. Rinse off and cleanse with the green tea bar they provide.

Make sure your rinse/cleanse all the lactic acid solution off your face. Dry off with a towel. Now apply the pH prep solution again over your face and let that dry on your skin.

Follow with a moisturizer or serum of your choice. You mentioned how you use Benzoyl Peroxide and BHA twice a day. I wouldn't recommend using those immediatley after this. Maybe after the next few applications when your skin has built tolerance, but for the first few applications, use a serum or moisturizer of your choice.

Also, you will find after using this lactic acid peel twice a week that your pores will be clearer so you might just end up cutting down to using BP/BHA only once a day. It works great at clearing up pores, stubborn pimples as well as fading acne marks.

The second time you do this, let the acid stay on your skin for 7 minutes instead of 3 minutes. Your skin will a very slight peeling effect the next day or two.

I hope I answered your questions. =)

omg, i love you! seriously, i think you should become a dermatologist. you're amazing. God bless. yeah, the bp has made me darker. i'm like uuuggggggh, i use the bp from acne.org, and it's intense because we have to use a lot for it to work the way Dan said it would. and wow, i'm looking at before and after pics and people look tanned. i realized this last month when my summer tan wouldn't go away. i realized it was the bp that was keeping me dark. and actually, i've even darkned a shade. i can see the eye areas not as dark as the rest of my face since that's where we dont use bp. lol. but wow, thank you so much. honestly, you're a gem.

Thanks for the nice comment. =D

BP is actually bad for your skin in the long run. It is a pro-oxidant (opposite of Vitamin C, which is an anti-oxidant).

What you experienced is a very common side effect (especially among people with colored skin) resulting from benzoyl peroxide use. It can be irritating to the skin and actually increases melanin production. I personally do not use it. For pore cleaning, I stick to my Retin-A (retinoid) at night and maybe a light spot treatment of BHA (salicylic acid, which is far superior and actually good for your skin). If you're interested, for my BHA product I use Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid. It's like a toner. I love it.

You'll find with a use of a peel that your skin won't be breaking out as much. The BP should be the first thing you should let go. I also forgot to mention that you must wear sunscreen when using this peel. People should be wearing sunscreen everyday, all year around because UVA rays travel through windows etc.

Skin lightening is pretty useless if you are not using a sunscreen everyday. The melanin will just come back. Especially after a peel when their is fresh new skin that is very vulnerable to getting a tan (sun damage).

hmmm, i am thinking about buying avene diacneal. is that good enough to keep me cleared? right now, i'm practically acne free. only like 3 tiny pimples most likely due to my sunblock. yeah, i have paula's bha, i accidently bought the gel. but it still works miracles. i have zero black heads. i love it. i've been using it for around 2 to 3 months and i still have around 2/3s of the bottle full.

ooooooooh, oh yeah, so okay, on the instructions, it says to use a cotton ball, wouldn't it be easier using a Q tip? i'm sure if i use a cotton ball, most of the liquid will just get soaked up and not go to my face. but with a tip, a lot more will.

November 1, 2009 at 9:12 AM
Blogger Mileena said...

Yeah, I guess a Q-tip could work. You can also just use your fingertips like I do. This way ensures nothing is absorbed into cotton and all is going into your skin.

But honestly they all get the job done: cotton pad, q-tip or fingertips. I prefer the latter. =)

haha awesome, one more question, for step one, after i'm done rinsing the soap off, do i just let my face dry on it's own? or do i gently dry it off with a towel. it says to let dry, but i used quite a lot of water. lol. my face is like soaking wet right now.

November 1, 2009 at 2:32 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

LOL! Pat your skin gently with a towel to completley dry off.

Don't let water sit on your face and dry off. First of all that process will take up way too much time (lol), but also that dries out the skin. Just like when lips get dry through constant prescence of moisture (i.e. licking them) it just further dries them out. Water drying on the skin will only draw out moisture.

Hope all goes well. Tell me how your first time with this one goes! =P

haha, i found that out the hard way. =/
lol, anywayyy, yeah, it went smoothly. the results were non existent though. but when i put on that lactic acid, i could litereally feel like all of my acne burning. i was like ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it subsided after like 2 minutes though. lol.

The first application (sometimes the second one as well) won't result in intense results. Keep using it and you will find your skin becoming clearer and much more even.

Since you are not using retinoids at the moment, after you completley finished with the 40% peel, you can always work your way up in strength if you'd like. I like to stay at 40% since I already get great exfoliation from my Retin-A gel, I just like the brightening effect this one gives.

The burning is always a shocker though lol. My first time using it was pretty much the same. The second application should be left on longer (7 minutes). The burning won't be AS intense the second time around, trust me LOL!

okay, now to give you a real update, i wasnt even paying attention to results. so my face did get smoother, idk if this is from the peel itself or from the sunblock i use since it's insanely not oily, but has an oily feeling to it. just as bad as my normal oily skin without anything on it. but my acne did get smaller. i got a few tiny pimples(like half the size of a mustard seed) because of my puported non cosmedogenic sunblock. so this was nice. i've learned that face products take months to see real results. so i'm ready to wait like 6 months before i move to a different peel. hehe. aside from that i bought the 2 oz bottles. lol. oh yeah, i'm on the verge of buying a retinoid. avene diacneal i think it's the name. i'm buying it from ebay. here's the link, what do you think?
crapppp!!!! i cant paste. uugggggggh. it's just as bad as getting rick rolled.

November 2, 2009 at 4:29 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

lol I wish there was a way for commenters to paste here. I'm going to try and figure a way to do that. :S

I forgot to mention in my initial post that your skin will break out in the first week or so when using a peel. This also happens with retinoids (more common in prescription strength ones). This is completley normal and common. It is actually called the purging stage.

It's when the dead cells, keratin and comedones rise to the surface of the skin resulting in pimples. These will go away very soon. Once this stage is over, your skin will definitley reap the benefits.

btw, if you do decide to purchase the Diacneal, let me know I can give you some tips on how to ease into using it. Most people don't have a problem, but if you've never used a retinoid before it could be tricky if you start seeing irritation and such.

omg, this is my second time using i. i thought i could be a little more liberal with it. and i was soooooo freaken wrong. not only did i put on enough for two peels but i also left it for 7 minutes. my face was BURNING. so much. it turned red. it was horrible. yeah, i'm never taking it this far. i applied too much prep solution. then i equaled that amount with the latic acid. it was gruesome. i couldn't even wash my face after the lactic acid. i had to soak my face with water before i could wash it with the soap. i'm so relieved now.

Oh no! I'm glad you didn't get a chemical burn or anything.

With these peels, you don't need much and building tolerance is key. I've used many AHAs, peels and such before so by my second treatment I could leave the lactic acid on for 7 minutes and only experience mild stinging (which is normal). Everybody's skin reacts different.

I caution that the next time you do it (and wait at least 3 days before you do another application) go back to using 3 minutes. Don't overapply this time but I think you know that by now.

Glad things didn't get too bad. Was your skin extremely red and irritated afterwards? Gah - give your skin some rest the next 3 days. No BP and such tommorrow. Just gentle, gentle!

def. no bp tomorrow. right now, it kind of stings a little. like i'm not moving my face at all. and like yeah, very irritated. i seriously learned my lesson today. i peel every 4 days. but damn, i can't believe i did that. left it on for twice the time and twice the dossage. horrible experience.

Well we all make mistakes in the beginning at everything. I think my first peel (I believe it was with Alpha Hydrox 12%) and I remember I thought my skin was so resilient and tough that instead of using the mask for 20 minutes which it instructs on the package, I left it on all night.

OMG. It was beyond horrible. And I was in highschool at the time. I learned my lesson too lol. Thank god for concealer!

OMFG! all night! WOW! that must have hurt so bad. yeah, it's funny how i tell myself why do people do stupid things. but this one, it really topped the list. i remember with my first peel. it stunt for like a good 10 minutes, each minute getting less and less pain. and that wasn't eve that much of a dosage and i left it on for like 4 minutes top. but omfg. this was just retarded. like my face got burned. i'm not going to school tomorrow, just because of that. i have some skin relief from paula's choice. i have like 3 samples. now it's def. the time to use them.

Oh that's awesome you got the skin relief. Those are great. Just be gentle with your skin.

:O @ your face getting burned. I hope it isn't too bad. It will fade if you just take it easy with your skin. You don't have to if you don't want to, but sometimes whenever my skin feels burned or excessive irritation from using too much retinoids, I use a raw honey mask. Raw honey is supposed to be calming and soothing to the skin. I get the raw honey from Whole foods.

You don't have to do that, but definitley something that is inexpensive and works and soothing away the sting.

yikes, using too much retinoid. according to the vendor im getting my diacneal from in japan, im getting my retinoid in, latest, 20 days. how can i build up resistance to retinoids?

November 5, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Retinoids are just like peels in the sense that you start out slow or gentle and work your way to total tolerance.

Most of the major irritation risks come from presecription strength retinoids like Retin-A, Tazorac and Differin. The OTC ones still have risks, but irritation or problems are few and far between.

My advice is with Diacneal is this: The first night you use it, apply it sparingly over your whole face. You don't need much, sometimes only less than a size of nickel will suffice. If you experience any intense reactions (like extreme burning feeling, or extreme irritation - mind you I'm emphasising extreme conditions) than rinse it off but honestly that will most likely not happen. That usually only happens when people just simply cannot tolerate retinoids (topical vitamin A derivatives) period.

Even if you go to sleep, wake up and your skin is fine with no visible problems. Take the next day off (meaning don't use Diacneal the next day). Then on the third day use it again.

Do this for a week and by the next time you start, if you feel and see your skin is not overtly becoming irritated to the Diacneal, you can start using it every night.

I always caution that ALL retinoids (specifically Rx ones) in the beginning shouldn't be used on consecutive days. The max number of days you can take off is 2 in between applications. I say this, because it's actually been scientifically proven through a study that any more than 2 days off in between applications puts you back to square one in terms of tolerance. Your skin loses the tolerance it has built towards the retinoid. So basically in the beginning, it is 1 day with Diacneal, 1 day off. And just keep going like that throughout the week. You could also do 1 day with Diacneal and 2 days off.

=)

Anonymous Anonymous said...

wow thank you so much for the advice. thats such a downer only 2 days off to be on square one. oh well anything to not use BP.

November 5, 2009 at 7:44 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Yeah, but that generally pretains to the first week or so of retinoids. Once your skin has built up tolerance after a week or two, you can use retinoids in any way you want. Now that I've been using retinoids for almost 3 years now, i can take a break for maybe 5-8 days depending on what my skin is needing (this rarely happens because I love and need to use retinoids nightly to keep my pores clear, but most likely it might happen once or twice in the winter when my skin is just really dry and I don't feel like using a retinoid).

So this 1 day on, 1 day off rule only applies in the beginning when your skin is completley new and unexposed to retinoid use.

And you're right - ANYTHING is better than using BP. LOL. Your skin will thank you in the long run. =P

oh, thats a huge relief. i just reread your article on retinoids. the benefits sound really really good. im really big with anti aging. oh yeah, so okay, after my second time using this peel, i noticed that my forhead line is practically non existent which i didn't even know was possible for something like a peel to do. i feel pretty good about my skin. it's has been this good in such a long time. i'm litereally acne free. you can't see any. at all. and i have the type of acne where i would have a bunch of mustard seed sized ones EVERYWHERE. can't even pop them. lol. my skin doesn't even feel oily either. no more black heads. all of this accomplished in around 2.5 months. lol. thanks to my bp and 2% bha and now this magical peel.

hi Mileena, I read your post in the forum about inhousepharmacy.com, but I could not find it, I was wondering how can I get retin-a non generic online?
Can I buy retin-A in my local pharmacy w/o prescription?
and I heard a lot about Alldaychemist retin-a which manufactured in India, is it safe?
what is the difference between retin-A generic and prescriptions?

thanks :)

I'm probably not the best person to ask for buying generic Retin-A. I've never done that before, I go for the prescription version.

The main difference is in the inactives. Real, prescription Retin-A has very little inactive ingredients aside from tretinoin and alcohol topical.

Most people don't have a problem with generic retinoids but some people do (breakouts cause the inactives are a lot more elaborate so more risk of possible pore clogging).

Alldaychemist is a known one, not too sure about the other ones. The ones manufactured in India are safe though. :)

Gotta take a look at that one. Thanks for letting me know :)

nvm. i didnt apply much sunscreen that day. but the following day, i could def. feel the sunscreen on my face. im sticking wit the cleansing oil. just not a lot of it. just enough to cover my face. then, i get a tad of balancing cleanser to get the oil off. this way my skin doesnt feel so stripped.

That sounds great - you don't need much of the cleansing oil. It removes pretty instantly, just massage lightly.

I get that 'stripped' feeling to which is why a more moisturizing skin lightener like Lantomi is needed. In the summer I usually don't notice any stripping so the air quality is so humid so my skin needs to remove the excess oil/sweat. :)

Hi! Yes I am still using both Retin-A gel (nightly) and the MUAC 40% Lactic Acid Peel once or twice a month. If I wasn't using the rx retinoid I would probably use it more, but I don't want to overdo it with the exfoliation.

I have to say that the lactic acid peel has done wonders for any acne marks I've had. Peels are great for pitted scars and rough skin texture. Retinoids won't do much at getting rid of roughness - a peel is required for this.

I would HIGHLY suggest the Lactic Acid Peel, especially if you don't have any active acne at the moment. If you still have acne (even with the usage of Tazorac) then the 25% Mandelic Acid peel would be an even better choice since that is great for acne prone skin types. Not that the lactic acid peel isn't - it's just this one (the 40% lactic acid peel) is specifically for lightening (fading scars, breaking up hyperpigmention. The solution contains high % of licorice extract as well which lightens through enzyme inhibition). Excellent peel for overall lightening.

If acne is not a concern of yours and Tazorac is treating it well, then go ahead and get the lactic acid peel. It's truly amazing, I will probably never stop using it, lol it's so good! I cannot comment personally on the mandelic acid peel, but with this one I can. It definitely smooths out the skin and does fade scars VERY well with consistent usage and great sunscreen used during the day.

Best of luck!

Thank you!! <3 It does take quite a bit of time to work on the blog, but I love it and have big plans for it (I'm currently (almost done actually) in the stage of launching the new version of it on it's own domain) so I always schedule it into my day. :)

There are a lot of sunscreens I like and recommend. I am currently using the Olay Complete Sensitive Skin Classic Version SPF 15 only because it's always cloudy here where I am with the UV index at 1 on most days so I can get away with an SPF 15 sunscreen. It's a great one for winter.

If you want to know more about sunscreens I like, go under the Label section on the blog (right hand side) and click on the 'sunscreen' tag and all the posts I mae about my fav. sunscreens or sunscreens in general will pop up.

The Kose Mask is awesome!! I used it for a good year and found it definitely lightened my skin to a degree from consistent usage. It's more of an instant brightening mask, as soon as you rinse it off your skin looks lovely and incredibly radiant. Overtime, the plant extracts in there did have an impact on some mottled hyperpigmentation on my upper cheeks so it definitely works!

But if you really are in the market for a good skin lightening mask, I would suggest getting the Neutrogena Fine Fairness Mask (available online easily). It contains 5% niacinamide (the amount that can inhibit melanin production) and seems to be a hit in Asia. It's a sheet style mask, so to conserve more of the product you can squeeze it out into an empty skin cream jar and get like 3-4 applications just from one sheet (I believe it comes in a pack of 6 sheets).

Another questiong for u -- for lactic peel- do i need to order the PH solution or can i just use witch hazel?

Yep, that's it. Local Chinatowns and Asian beauty stores in your area might carry them for less.

You can try Sasa.com (amazing vendor for Japanese or Asian brand skin lighteners). It's about $17.00 there:

I would get that one over the Kose. I've used the Kose and while I like it a lot, the active ingredients in Fine Fairness are superior and will most likely benefit your skin and your goals for your skin more than the Kose which is more of a maintenance mask (once you reach your skin tone goal).

You don't need to order the pH solution separately. The MUAC peel comes with a pH prep solution but once that finishes out (and always does faster than the actual lactic acid solution) you can use regular witch hazel found in most drugstores as an alternative. :)

An AHA based moisturizer can help with lightening scars and evening out the skin tone. AmLactin (amazing lactic acid moisturizer) and Neostrata's Smoothing Cream (comes in 3 strengths - contains glycolic acid) are my favorites :)
