Make Your Own Vitamin C Serum!

Vitamin C is one of the best things you can incorporate into your skin regimen. Not only does it lighten the skin by warding off free radicals which can stimulate melanocyte growth, but it builds collagen within the skin. So you are getting younger, plumper skin. Vitamin C can be used as a compliment to sunscreen.

Worn underneath - a Vitamin C serum can intensify the protection of your sunscreen. I've gotten great results with Vitamin C serums - better than most plant based extract lighteners like Makari and others. My skin is healthy and vibrant. Here are some homemade recipes you can use to make your Vitamin C serum, and save money.

You need an amber tinted bottle or some bottle that does not allow sunlight to illuminate through. Vitamin bottles, droppers are great too. Check this site out to purchase: http://www.theherbarie.com/

What You Need:

Now you have to realize if you want to make your Vitamin C serum water based or propylene glycol based. A water based C serum is made with just plain water BUT you have to make it fresh every morning, since it oxidizes faster.

You can get Vitamin C powders and crystals in a lot of healthcare stores. Make sure it's the right form (L-ascorbic acid) HOWEVER some compaines just write "Ascorbic Acid" which in some cases is still the right form just miswritten. For example....

NOW Ascorbic Acid
Whole Foods Vitamin C Crystals
Wild Oats Vitamin C

There are tons on the market. As for Propylene Glycol...you can get that at http://chemistrystore.com/ or http://thepersonalformulator.com/

Water Based Vitamin C Serum:
10% Serum = 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder/crystals and 4 teaspoons of water mixed.
20% Serum = 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder/crystals and 2 teasponns of water mixed

Propylene Glycol Based:
10% Serum = 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder/crystals, 3 teaspoons of water, 1 teaspoon of propylene glycol mixed
20% Serum = 1/2 teaspoon of Vitamin C powder/crystals, 2 teaspoons of water, 1/2 teaspoon of propylene glycol.

You can store the propylene glycol based C serums in the fridge if you want to make them last for at least a week. Remember, store in a cool, dark place.
=)

Hi Mileena!

Question how do you apply it to your face? And how do you mix it? Do you pour the products into the container or can you mix it in a small bowl?

Hi Tiffany,

if you make it fresh daily (so with just water and ascorbic acid powder/crystals) mixing it in a small bowl is just fine.

You can apply it with a cotton pad like you would a toner or your finger tips. I used to use my finger tips and it worked fine. APply a thin layer, a little goes a long way. ;)

Is it washed off the face?

It can be.

But if you want to use it as a 'serum' that it should be left on. You'll get better results that way, but ofcourse if your skin is very sensitive you can always use it as a mask/treatment. Still an instant glow/instant radiance from that as well.

So it can be left on for 20-30 mintues and rinsed off. =)

Is you face suppose to feel very sticky after using the water based vitamin c serum?

Yes. Unfortunately this is common and part of the reason why I don't use the DIY water based vitamin c serum. The sticky or tacky feeling is what turned me off. Adding propylene glycol does offset this significantly.

Hi Mileena,

Is it okay to put glycerin instead of propylene glycol?

Thank you

Hi!

Yes, you can use vegetable glycerin as an alternative to propylene glycol. =D Many people prefer using glycerin over propylene glycol anyway and they both are great at preventing premature oxidation. =D
