Product Review - Makari Night Cream

Makari's skin lightening line is relatively new (debuted about 4 or 5 years ago). It's popularity has slowly ascended throughout the years, and is quite well known through the various skin lightening communities on the internet.

One of the star products of Makari is their Night Cream. It is strong, but mild in comparison to the other products in the range (i.e. The Caviar Cream). After reading reviews about it, I decided to purchase it in January of 2006. I used the product from the span of January to early May of that year.

I should note that I actually used the Caviar Cream first, but it only ended up causing my skin to have awful breakouts, and really irritated the condition of my skin.

My experience with Makari Night Cream was a mixed one, but it definitley leans more toward the negative. It comes in an elegant looking jar, with a golden lid. To be honest, I could care less if the packaging is fancy looking, I'm more interested in the fact that the design can keep the product fresh for a longer period of time. I'm not a fan of creams/serums that come in jars due to the sanitary aspect. I know there are other ways to extract the product out instead of constantly dipping your fingertips in them (i.e. Q-tip, mini spatula) but I just don't like it. Also jar creams are constantly exposed to air which can overtime degrade the active ingredients in them.

The consistency of the product is thick. It is a night cream, so it usually is quite rich and emollient. One thing that I noticed was that the packaging stated the product was geared towards dry skin types. I must have not read that when I was in the process of purchasing it, because I most likely wouldn't of bought it if I knew that beforehand. My skintype is really oily.

Now in terms of results, letme just say that the product does indeed work. It does lighten the skin. It actually does a good job of lightening the skin due to the concentration of botanical extracts like licorice, mulberry and arbutin. i found my skin was getting really light, really fast. I start seeing results in the first 2 weeks of usage. At that time, I was not using retinoids so my cell turnover rate was slower than what it is now. I'm sure I would have seen even more rapid, intense results if I was using a retinoid along with Makari Night Cream.

So the product does work. The only problem is that the condition of my skin suffered. The product really is not designed for ANYONE that doesn't have dry, non-acneic skin. The product is not oil-free, has some silicones and has fragrance. Now, not all of these are necessarily problemtic ingredients for oily, normal, combination or acne-prone skin types - but the concentration of oils is quite high. You can feel it in the consistency of the product.

I started getting breakouts shortly after the second week of usage. While I was initially elated at the fact that my tan from my summer vacation from France was fading, and my skin was literally glowing, my acne just increased. As the months went on, I was getting depressed with the condition of my skin. In all honesty, what is the point of having bright, even toned, luminous skin when it is littered with acne?

The product proved to be too comedogenic and was clogging my pores too fast. I even tried to use exfoliators like microdermabrasion and peels to offset the acne but it wasn't enough. Finally by May of that year, I had enough and just stopped using the product on my face and neck. It took me about a full month to get my skin back to its clear, acne-free state.

In the end, I just used the leftover on my knees and elbows to correct some mild hyperpigmentation there. It lightened those areas well.

So...it's an interesting verdict. The Makari Night Cream without a doubt works. It has potent natural skin lighteners in there that do a decent job inhibiting melanin production. The problem is the inactives in the cream. They are very acne inducing and really can cause some serious damage (luckily I was wearing sunscreen everyday, or I probably would have ended up with lots of acne scars!). If you have dry skin that rarely ever gets pimples, I would recommend this product for you. It costs about $50.00 over at Amazon.com. It will get you to your goal skin tone for sure. But for anyone with normal, oily, combination or acne prone skin, the Makari Night Cream is only going to give your skin more problems.

Oh no, 'pizza face'? That's so terrible!! High school sucks anyway.

I actually wrote an article on retinoids on this blog. Here is the link:

http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/07/retinoids-skin-lightening.html

Retinoids honestly saved my skin. It was actually the horrible breakouts from Makari that prompted me to research about retinoids. It was only then I realized how great they are for not only getting rid of acne, but the whole skin and skin lightening.
Thanks for commenting!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it =)

Here in Toronto (where I live), Avene products are readily available. I can get them at local drugstores like Shoppers Drug Mart.

In the US, I'm not exactly sure which stores carry Avene products, I know for awhile CVS carried it but not anymore.

Fortunatley there are lots of online vendors that sell it. Some good ones are:

http://www.leguidesante.com/diacneal/products_2928.html

^ they ship internationally and it's a well reputed site.

http://www.zestessentials.com/acatalog/info_ZPF100.html

^ also ships internationally, quick, reliable and secure.

I think garden.co.uk also has it in stock. Those are great, well-known sites to get them.

Avene Diacneal is a great OTC retinoid to use as a first step. You will definitley be seeing results from it. I started out using Diacneal as well - works great.

did you notice your skin getting darker than your original tone after you discontinued?

October 31, 2009 at 8:31 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Darker than my original tone? No, my skin tone reverted back to my original yes. My acne also went away and went back to my normal, healthy skin condition.

I think it would only go darker than your original color (before using Makari) if you aren't using sunscreen during the day. When you use lightening products, they inhibit the amount of melanin you create. When those products are discontinued and are no longer being absorbed into the skin, AND the skin is not being protected by UVA/UVB rays (through use of sunscreen) - the skin's defense mechanism (which is melanin) increases to compensate the loss and skin can become darker.

how much makari is needed per application on the face? on the website it says a thin layer. but that's pretty relative. do they mean a dime size, a nickle size, a quater size?

November 1, 2009 at 2:07 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Personally, the size of a nickel suffices enough for my skin. Obviously the size of people's face's varies.

A rule I usually always follow is to apply the nickel sized (or quarter) onto the palm of my hand, and with my finger from my other hand, just apply micro-sized dots over my forehead, sides, cheeks, nose, chin (whole face) and blend in. The key is to apply sparingly, especially with Makari Night Cream. The cream is quite moisturizing so you don't need much. I know some people on the board used the size of pea for their whole face. It blends well too. =)

so i just got my avene diacneal over the mail. and okay, i bought it from hong kong for 24 bucks, which that right there seems EXTREMELY suspicious. is there a way that i could tell wether it's fake or not? the product looks just like the ones on the websites you gave me, howeer, it's not as red, like the lettering and design. it's more of an reddish/orangeish color. and everything's in french.

$24.00 is a good deal. Which site did you order it? Only if the site isn't reputable (meaning no contact info or anything) would I be suspicious.

The text and design on Diacneal is actually more orange so it seems right. And it is supposed to be in french, since Avene is a French company.

You're in the clear. It's fine. Fake products usually differ have more obvious indications like a pasted image (from the net) logo on the bottle.
Glad you got it though. Do you plan on using it this week? =D

AAAHHH!!!! no pasting. =( this is worse than getting rick rolled. i got it form the user luxaqua from ebay. japanese seller. i saw the reviews and i'm not the only one to purchase diacneal from them. yeah i do. i wanna start as soon as possible because i have this cream from paula's choice. it's the remarkably lightening gel. it has 2% hydroquinone; however, i'm using it as a spot treatment. i have 2 one milimeter in diameter freckless that i really want to get rid of and 1 lke really really black tiny dot on my forhead. btw, thank you sooo much for your help. you've been amazing.

OH Luxaqua, I know of her! Someone recommended me her name on Bright Skin when I was looking for Japanese sunscreens. She is a reputable member.

You can actually continue to use the Paula's lightening gel on those spots and apply the Diacneal over it if you'd like. Retinoids (of any kind, but particularily Retin-A) work very well with hydroquinone at getting rid of pesky spots.

LOL @ the pasting thing. I made it so that anyone can past in the comments. Perhaps I need to work out something. Have you tried pressing CTRL V to paste? Maybe that might work. =D

oh that's a relief. i feel bad now i was clogging her with questions about the authencity of her products. lol. wow what a bargain then diacneal for 24 bucks. half price! geesh. lol. one thing, i dont know how to use retinoids. =( i keep on hearing great things about em, but what's the use if idk how to apply em.

Yeah that's what I was saying - $24.00 is an awesome deal. Like seriously, I got my Diacneal for almost 40 bucks here. Gah! Yay for you though!

I'm pretty sure I mentioned how the application of retinoids is supposed to be in my retinoid post (both on Bright Skin and here). But just in case I didn't...I'll state it here =P

For me, a little more than a size of pea can suffice for my entire face. Everyone's face shape is different. But just know that less is more, it's wise not to slather a retinoid like Diacneal on like a moisturizer. Just apply a pea sized (or maybe a nickel if you need more) onto your fingertip and make micro-sized dots over your whole face and blend in.

All retinoids should be used at night. If you want to continue spot treating with your Paula's Choice Lightening Gel, you can apply that first on your probllem areas after you cleanse at night, wait about 10 minutes for that to absorb and apply Diacneal on top and over your face.

You can use Diacneal under your eyes, just be very gentle. I wouldn't recommend putting it on your eyelids though, because of the glycolic acid content.

With most retinoids, expect some purging in the first week. Your skin will break out a bit, that is completley normal.

If you are planning on using a peel that night, don't use Diacneal the same night. That is way too much exfoliation and will probably just cause unnecessary irritation.

For the first week, I wouild counsel 1 day on 1 day off. So you can use Diacneal tonight, and skip it tommorrow. Then use it on Wednesday, skip Thursday. Just to build tolerance. By next monday you can use it consecutively.

Also, always wear a sunscreen during the day. Very important now when starting retinoids because your skin is going to be more prone to sun damage since it's being exfoliated so rapidly. I plan on making a blog post on Avene Diacneal since I think it's a pretty good OTC retinoid that many people can benefit from.

omg, thank you SOOOOO much. i've know i've said this a couple of times. but like really, i mean it. you're awesome. this is so helpful.

aside from using the ligheting gel, i use the shea butter bar cleanser from muac, which lasts like 3 or more months, i love it, paula's bha liquid, which i got like last week, i've been using it for 2 days and it's left me a little bit irritated. the bha gel gave me like no irritation though. i also use muac's whitening cream, muac's pre minimizer, and acne.org's bp. once i start using diacneal, i'll stop using the bp. but what should i do about the other products? how should i apply them.

November 16, 2009 at 4:26 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

You're going to have to alternate some days since you got a lot of products. The BHA can be worn in the daytime. Use that first right after you cleanse your skin in the morning. If you use moisturizer now that it's getting colder, use your Muac's Whitening Cream then on top.

You can alternate, some days when your skin doesn't feel so dry instead of using the Muac's Whitening Cream (which is quite emollient and hydrating) use Muac's Minimizer.

I don't like BP at all, but that should be used at night if you are going to use it.

The last thing that should go on your skin in the daytime is your sunscreen. Apply that on top. Make sure you wait at least 10 minutes in between each application of product (meaning put on BHA, wait 10 mins, put on pore minimizer, wait 10 mins, then apply sunscreen) to allow everything to fully absorb.

=)

i use the pore minimizer on the area where my cheek bones are. then i use the whitening cream on my forhead. i usually apply those two one right after the other. would it be effective for me to use the bha, then the minimizer and cream. then at night, diacneal(every other day or so) with the minimizer and cream?

November 16, 2009 at 6:49 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

That sounds good. At night, you may want to stick with less products, so maybe just the diacneal and the minimizer or Diacneal and lightening gel on spots.

The reason being is you don't want to mix too many actives. I'm guessing when you say the minimizer and 'cream' for your night routine, you are referring to the lightening gel instead of the cream? Or no? You plan on using the MUAC whitening cream 2x a day?

So far I'm thinking this:

AM:
-Cleanse
- BHA
- Minimizer
- MUAC Whitening Cream
- Sunscreen

PM:
-Cleanse
- Minimizer
- Paula's Lightening Gel
- Diacneal

That seems more correct to me, BUT if you plan on using the MUAC whitening cream twice, you can but you may find it too hydrating to use at night with Diacneal, since Diacneal has an emollient base (cetyl alcohol) so it's suffices combo/oily skin types with enough hydration IMO.

oh, i meant the cream. i havent used the paula's whitening gel since hydroquinone and bp are not at match at all. it gives you dark marks, which is something i experienced on my freckle. im gonna start using the hydroquinone after i've been on diacneal for 2 weeks. yeah, i use the the muac whitening cream twice daily.

November 17, 2009 at 4:07 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

oh i forgot. the muac whitening cream i use only on my forhead, and paula's whitening gel, when i use it, i'll only use it on 2 spots located on my cheeks and one very tiny dot like spot on my forehead. the pore minimizer i use on like 1/3 to half of my cheek area. the rest of the products, i use all over my face.

November 17, 2009 at 4:14 AM

Oh, okay that sounds perfectly fine. Once you start using Diacneal, you'll find BP to be unnecessary since that alone contributes to acne marks and freckles. Very horrible ingredient for skin health, I just don't like it at all LOL.

also can i use avene diacneal every day? i read somewhere that people use it on an every other day basis.

Usually the rule of using it every other day applies to novices. People who haven't used retinoids in the past before, or are just starting their first week on a retinoid (i.e. your case).

After about a week of using it one day on, one day off (every other day) you can most definitley use it every night. There is no harm or problem in that. =)

so okay, i use put on my diacneal and i do feel a little sting. similar to when i first tried the 40% lactic acid peel. omg, when i was squeezing it onto my had it was so cute. like this cream came out of a tiny tiny hole. it was adorable. lol. i leave the diacneal on right? just like the paula's bha. when should the purging beging?

November 17, 2009 at 2:49 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

LOL!

Purging begins probably in the next few days. The purging process might not be as intense for you since you are already use great exfoliating products like BHA and the peel.

And yes it's left on. Diacneal (like all other retinoids) should be used at night and not in the daytime.

Woot! I'm glad you are using some sort of retinoid. I feel like I'm a broken record at Bright Skin Forum because I always recommend people to use a retinoid but honestly, it is the best thing aside from sunscreen for the skin. One more person on the bandwagon! Yay =D

lmao OH YES YES YES!!! the wagon to perfect skin utopia. lol. what's your history with retinoids? you're very experienced with this stuff. i really do hope diacneal works on me. i've been reading multitudes of review, most of them positive. but still ya know. i just really hope it works. my goal is to only use like 2 things on my face a lightener and a retinoid. spending an hour on your face every day and night can be kinda tedious. it's always fun for me though.

I've been using retinoids since mid 2007. I got some bad breakouts from Makari in 2006 and kind of just stuck with peels, AHAs and sunscreen as my go-to skin routine to fade acne marks and heal the damage Makari did to my skin condition.

I started reading about ways to have the best skin possible. I wanted to take care of myself, not only my body but my skin. I figure, if you are using healthy products and doing the things that will preserve the youth and natural radiance of your skin, the brightness and glow, and all that will come naturally. Retinoids were something foreign to me, but learning about all their benefits and finally using them has changed my skin so much.

I started out, just like you using Avene Diacneal. Used it for about 3 months, finished it and then I knew the next step was to use prescription since those are in a whole different class. I started out with Differin Gel (most mild Rx retinoid) and saw a massive reduction in breakouts. My skin was more clear than ever before. Once I finished the tube, I decided to go a step further and move to Retin-A gel since I found the Differin to be too mild for me.

So from Jan 2008 to now I have been using Retin-A gel nightly on my skin and my skin is relatively always clear, brighter, lighter more even than it has ever been and just generally healthier. I started out with 0.0025% Retin-A gel (lowest strength) and now I am using 0.001% the highest strength. I just kept working my way up as I wanted the strongest for my acne-prone skin and it took awhile. It's not overnight.

I'm sure Diacneal will work for you. Give it time, even if you don't see drastic results right away, trust me you are preparing your skin for the future. Retinoids will make your skin much healthier in the long run. You can always keep evolving in retinoid use and eventually maybe sometime next year feel you need a prescription retinoid, or not. For some people OTC retinoids like Diacneal are good enough for their skin. =D

that's wicked cool. i really do hope so. my acne gets cleared pretty fast and if diacneal is all i need, i'm sticking to it. aside from that less than 30 bucks for diacneal, haha, can't beat that. ya know. and i'm only going to use a pea size, this stuff must last me months. haha like 3. that's awesome. and it's multipurpose, ya know. the less i spend on my face, the more money i get to save for my braces. like ultimately, my goal is to use the milk, hopefully, see results within 6 months, and whatever results i get, maintain them with the vicky bi-white reveal.

Sounds like you got it all planned out. =D

It's crazy, I just read a post on Bright Skin about someone who is having success with the Caviar Cream. I'm always suprised when I find someone can tolerate that, but then again I of all people should know that everyone's skin is different. That's what makes it so cool.

I never tried the milk, but I've heard only good things. I know many members that have had success with that.

And Bi-White Reveal is great for maintenance since it can also be your vitamin c product (antioxidant product).

WOOT! Always happy when someone saves money and is making progress, and in your case, on the road to getting the best skin possible. =)

The active ingredeints in that list are so down the ingrdeints list that it will not really have much affect on the skin! my take on this is that its using illigal lightening ingredients to lighten the skin! and their ingredeints label is a lie! im studying cosmetic science, and i can say 100% from that label that IT WOULD NOT WORK! only if some other nasty ingredeints were smuggled in there!
This is the problem with so called 'forum' products that supposidly gain a reputation through forums! and mind you that too by the makes them selves! lol so its sad that people would fall for it all! WAKE UP PEOPLE!
