Motivation & Skin Lightening

I recieved an e-mail today from a friend that used to be a regular member of the Bright Skin Forum. She told me how she finally reached her skin lightening goal, of having an even complexion at her desired shade. I was absolutley thrilled for her. After exchanging a couple of more e-mails, I was inspired to make this blog post about the whole process of skin lightening, and how proper motivation plays a huge role in reaching a goal.

Many people who are skin lightening feel that nothing is working for them. Many people feel like their goals for their skin will never be met, or just seem too far away. Well, my answer or way of dealing with that is to have the proper mentality. I believe the first thing you need to tell yourself is this: This is YOUR goal. This is your skin. You cannot look to other people as a guideline for your skin lightening. You can definitley take their advice, but ultimately your skin is unique in how it reacts and produces results with products.

You also have to come into this whole process with clear, attainable goals. A lot of times, if you've been lightening for so long and not much progress has been made, you start to forget your initial goal of why you wanted to lighten, or what exactly you wanted in the end. So, whether you are just beginning your skin lightening process, or are in the middle or end of it, here is some advice I can give that really helps keep me motivated and feeling (and knowing) like my skin is reaping the benefits.

The first thing you need to do is to have a goal that is attainable, measurable, and that you can be accountable for. With so many skin lightening companies promising to lighten your skin 5 shades in 4 weeks, fade all discoloration, acne marks, freckles etc. it's hard not to get tempted and have a deluded objective. You need to realize that this is not an overnight thing. Skin lightening takes time, whether you are getting rid of sun damage or lightening your skin up in shades. You have to realize that it takes time. You have to be patient.

I take one thing at a time. Skin lightening is a process, so you have to get rid of each battle in order to win the war. I tell myself this: "I am going to lighten those freckles by the end of the year". That is an attainable goal. It is not ALL that I want in terms of skin lightening, but it's one of the goals that will lead me to my 'dream goal'.

You should also be able to measure your skin lightening goal. We all know buying products can be costly, that is why I started doing my own research and not looking to company promises. That is the whole point of All About Skin Lightening, this blog is to help everyone who has a skin lightening goal to find exactly what their goal is, and how they can reach it. By breaking it up, and targeting one thing at a time (i.e. "I am going to get a sunscreen first, because I know that is the number one rule and way to keep my skin protected", or "I am going to get a peel in the next month when I have enough money since I know that effective exfoliation helps remove old, dead cells with higher melanin content") you are measuring out your goal. Also, give yourself time. Don't expect to reach results in a month or 6 months. Understand that skin lightening doesn't happen overnight, just like weightloss or getting rich and prosperous, it takes time.

The last rule to know when skin lightening is to make sure you are accountable for your goal. If you choose to use products with hydroquinone, you best be accountable for the effects of that substance. If you decide not to wear sunscreen for a month, you are going to be accountable for that sun damage, and further darkening you acquired. If you plan on using safe, skin lighteners that have botanical extracts, or vitamin C, or retinoids, you should be accountable and realize that it takes time and YOU are reaping the benefits of these ingredients. You must understand that skin lightening is a life long thing, it isn't just about using one really potent lightener, getting 3 shades lighter and then stopping. It is a committment, that is why using safe, non-toxic products is the way to go. Using safe, healthy skin lighteners = skin that is less prone to the visible signs aging. It is that simple.

I just had to get that out. Skin lightening is an interesting, hard, yet rewarding journey in my opinion. These past 4 years I've been lightening, my skin has gotten so much healthier and better looking. All that sun damage from my teen years fading is very exciting to see.

Having your mindset in the right place makes a world's difference. Don't get too down on yourself when you find your skin isn't lightening up or your scars aren't fading. Stay positive, and just look back to your goal. If you've been lightening for awhile and feel like you hit a roadblock, step back and re-examine all of this. Change your goal so that it is attainable, measurable and accountable. Trust me, you will definitley see an improvement and you will be much happier with the end results.

HI mileen,

i have a question my skin lightens during winter time maybe 2 shades lighter and during summertime i go darker i know it has to do with sun but can cold weather cause skin lighter . i have seen that during winter time i like my skin colour apart from dry skin .have you noticed anything like that?

Hi Bency,

I experience this as well. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the UV index is significantly lower in the winter (but I still wear sunscreen). And the cold doesn't stimulate oil production like humidity or heat does. The less oily my skin is I find it has a 'lighter' appearence due to the lack of oil oxidation.

Also coldness brings a natural flush or pinkness to the skin which can kind of mute out other tones.

I'm glad you feel motivated, I just thought to put something out here to help people who were feeling a lack of drive in terms of lightening. It can happen, just takes time. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks. You will definitley reach your goal if you have your mind and your goal in the right place. I find if I make too big of a goal (not attainable) I end up disappointing myself or feeling like I made very little progress.

Skin lightening is so gradual but when you start seeing results in the mirror, it is amazing. The transformation can be motivating in itself. <3

Hi! Thank you for liking my artcle ;D

The general rule to avoid rebound pigmentation is to wear sunscreen daily to protect your skin and maintain your skin tone with a great plant based lightener or antioxidant serum.

Both are great, antioxidants like Vitamin C serums are great at lightening skin and making the skin resilient (collagen building).

Botanical based lighteners like Hypercreme Illumination Fluid, Skinceuticals Phyto+ and the UNT EX White 2 can lighten skin safely without any irritation or inducing of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Also being gentle as a whole is important too. Gentle exfoliation is key, since being too harsh can trigger melanin production. ;)

Hey Meena, have you heard of MSM supplements to lighten skin color and do you know if it works??

MSM supplements are good for your health but there is no concrete evidence proving they lighten skin. Until one comes out I really don't buy it. Dr. Thienna boasts about it but her claims that 'darker skin is a result of toxins in the body' is really a load of bull.

Do ponds lightening creams work?
I'm fair-skinned and I'd like to be super pale, I'm pale but not as much as I'd like. Do you think I can get lighter? The thing is that I dont have any freckles, I've never been sun burnt nor have any dark spots on my face..do you think any lightening product would help me?

The Ponds Lightening Creams are more skin brighteners than lighteners. I believe they are niacinamide based (vitamim b#)? Niacinamide is great for the skin and does help in fading hyperpigmentation, evening the skin tone and brightening the overall look - but not in shades.

Paul & Joe Whitening Serum combined with a sunscreen can be a good option though.

Umm,,, i am new here, i have a tanned Asian skin, what products should I buy? I read ur article that i should have sunscreen, cleanser and whitrning serum, but which brand that u would recommend for me? Also do i need to go for chemical peeling?

Thanks heaps

Hi Jenny,

Vitamin C injections don't really make much a difference in skin tone. They are highly beneficial to the health, but the only 'IV" injection that works for inhibiting melanin production in the skin is glutathinone injections. They are more popular in Asia, particularily the Phillipines I think. They are highly effective because they directly deliver glutathione (antioxidant) into the blood stream which also directly affects the skin.

IPL is usually given to people with localized hyperpigmentation (spots, patches).

A chemical peel is optional. The key is exfoliation. So it doesn't have to be a chemical peel (though they are highly effective especially lactic acid ones) but any type of exfoliant (so that can be weekly scrubs, masks or using an alpha hydroxy acid product at night or retinoid). Exfoliation helps to remove old, dead melanin filled cells and allows for ones affected by your lightener to rise up. With consistent exfoliation, sun protection and use of a lightener your skin should progressively get lighter.

Since you are a novice, I would recommend gentle products.

For your lightener I would suggest an antioxidant based one like Paul & Joe Whitening Serum (bobodave.com, beautykat).Wonderful product that gets plenty of rave reviews. I posted a recommendation on it and in there is a link where a woman who used it after a laser treatment found her skin becoming 3 shades lighter! That is a rarity, but this lightener is particular effective.

For your sunscreen I would recommend something lightweight and matte. I like Japanese sunscreens like Sofina UV Perfect SPF 50 or the Biore Perfect UV face Milk. There are a few others like Kanebo and Anessa. These I get online but should be found in local Asian beauty stores.

The reason I like Japanese sunscreens is because they wear beautifully on the skin. Not greasy, shiny, heavily fragranced etc. They are light (it feels like nothing on your skin) they control oil and make your skin look fresh all day. Plus the sun protection ;)

You do need a cleansing oil to remove them though since they are quite water resistant. Any one would do like DHC's or Fancl's. I think MAC makes one too.

Good luck <333

You blog is simply fantastic. This article has inspired me to reach my lightening goals.

I was born fairly light skinned but due to playing cricket and other sports outdoor as a child and walking to college in my late teenage years my skin darkened a few shades. I'm not very dark but just want to be light like I used to be.

I have been looking to lighten my skin to the levels it was when I was a child.

My job now is indoors so I don't get much sun exposure. I avoid the sun like a plague!

I have purchased a lightener for men called Fair and Handsome. I also use SPF 30 or 40 sunblock daily. I also use a facial scrub about 2 or 3 times a week. I have only just started using my Fair and Handsome cream.

Do you think what I'm doing is okay?
Will I achieve my goal of 4 to 5 shades lighter within a year?

Can you give me any advice?

Hi Indian_Guy!

Thanks for liking my blog. <333

You're definitely on the right track in cutting down on unnecessary, prolonged sun exposure and using an SPF product like Fair & Handsome. Fairness creams are like mild skin brighteners. Don't expect them to lighten you 2-3 shades but they can brighten and even out your complexion or perhaps lighten at least 1 shade overall.

Using a scrub is great but a peel is even deeper and better at correcting sun damage. Invest a great lactic acid peel like the Makeupartistchoice.com's 40% Lactic Acid Peel (with the lightening extract licorice extract). I wrote a review on it and if you check the comments section for that post I write out the steps to using the peel.

It's an amazing product that I continue to use to this day (once a month). Peels are used once or twice a week for deep exfoliation and lifting of dead skin cells/keratinocytes and deposited melanin.

If you continue a regimen of Fair & Handsome, sun avoidance and great, consistent, gentle exfoliation you can definitely achieve perhaps 3-4 shades lighter within a 12 month span.

:)

Hi Sarah,

Lightening pass your original birth color is possible, but it takes time. The number one thing I would recommend for her is to wear sunscreen daily to prevent any further UV damage. Sunscreen also protects results from lightening products.

It really depends on her skin type which sunscreen she would prefer. I've suggested some great ones on my blog - all ones that I love. If you click on 'sunscreen' under the tag label section on the right hand side of the blog you will get a listing of all posts I made regarding sunscreen and my favorite ones.

She also needs some type of gentle, consistent exfoliation like a weekly AHA based peel (Makeupartistchoice.com makes great ones) or simply a great scrub.

Exfoliation helps to remove dead, melanin filled cells and allows less melanin load skin cells to come to the surface layer.

Lastly she would need a lightener. I would go with a plant extract based one like the O'Slee Whitening Serum

http://www.cosme-de.com/en/product/product_page.html?pdid=5019

Fantastic, inexpensive lightener that can be used at night alone or during the day underneath her sunscreen.

...btw, I just wanted to know does she want to be on a skin lightening regimen or is this just something you are suggesting her to do? Skin lightening should be a personal choice.
