Effective Vitiligo Treatment For Dark Skinned Individuals Found

An exciting breakthrough in the treatment of vitiligo has been discovered for people with dark skin. Excimer laser has been shown to repigment patients in a few treatments with little to no risks or chance of adverse effects. Even with severe vitiligo cases, excimer laser has been a very effective treatment amongst darker skin types.

What makes this even more exciting is that it works exceptionally well in sensitive areas such as the face and neck. Excimer laser seems to work more rapidly on darker facial skin which is a rarity in treating localized pigmentation disorders. A complete treatment of vitiligo would be the excimer laser combined with topical calcineurin inhibitor such as tacrolimus or pimecrolimus.

According to Dr. Lebwohl (professor and chairman of Department of Dermatology in Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York) excimer laser can accomplish what many other therapies out there cannot.

He states:

“For instance, some dermatologists use high-dose systemic steroids to treat patients with vitiligo, which does temporarily result in dramatic repigmentation. The problem, however is that you can't keep a patient on steroids forever, because of the many side effects. When you take patients off the steroids, their vitiligo comes back with a vengeance."

Unfortunately excimer lasers are not available in all areas. To this day, only a few hundred excimer laser machines are available in the US alone.

Excimer laser is designed to treat psoriasis and vitiligo. It stimulates an individuals’ own natural pigmentation. The pigmentation spreads throughout the skin and returns to the ‘original’ overall complexion. The picture I posted above is a patient of Dr Lebwohl who received 25 treatments of the excimer laser and saw successful results.
