Product Recommendation: Oleda Super Skin Lightening Gel

Combining 2% lactic acid, 3% glycolic acid, and 2% kojic acid in an aloe vera concentrate base, Oleda Super Skin Lightener Gel looks a promising skin lightener. It is designed to treat brown spots, age spots, discolorations and blotches on the face, neck, hands and body. It comes in 3 sizes: 2oz, 4oz,and 8oz. The witch hazel and aloe vera content together make for a soothing skin treatment with a liquidy texture.

Kojic acid (the main active ingredient) is a fantastic skin lightener because of it's strong ability to inhibit melanin. Though it may not be as gentle as botanical extracts like bearberry, mulberry or licorice, it is one of more effective lighteners. It acts very much like hydroquinone, however without the risk of being cytotoxic to skin cells. Kojic Acid at 2% has been proven to decrease the amount of melanin in the skin's content at a significant rate if used for a long span of time.

The lactic acid and glycolic acid together with the kojic acid will yield a synergistic skin lightening process. The rapid sloughing off old dead skin cells with more melanin (by the lactic and glycolic acid) will quickly be replaced by lighter ones (by the kojic acid).

I would imagine, like with most lighteners, the Oleda Super Skin Lightening Gel would work very well when combined with a retinoid. Using a retinoid with a lightener like this can be tricky since it has AHAs, but it can be done, and the results can be tenfold in terms of skin lightening.

Another feature I like about Oleda's Super Skin Lightening Gel is the fact that it is oil-free and judging from the ingredients won't be too problematic at all for most skin types. Lactic acid (at this gentle concentration) as well as glycolic acid will promote cell turnover rate which will help with the clearing of blocked pores. Also, witch hazel (a popular skin toner ingredient) can help with pore issues.

I recommend this lightener to anyone who is looking to fade discolorations, or is looking for a lightener. Using with an rx retinoid would be the best route, as kojic acid and tretinoin together would be very similar to hydroquinone + tretinoin, which is touted as the ultimate skin lightening combination in the dermatology world. You also can't beat the price and variety of size choices. The Oleda Super Skin Lightening Gel runs for about $18.50 (for 2oz) and can be purchased through Amazon.com, as well as the official Oleda website. =)

Ingredients:
Whole Lead Aloe Vera Concentrate, Purified Water, Hydroxyethylcellulose, 3% glycolic acid, 2% kojic acid, 2% lactic acid, Witch hazel extract, Methylparaben, Fragrance, Propylparaben.

can you use an AHA with retin A?

Yes you can. There is one study that shows that AHA combined with Retin-A is even more synergistic since it ensures complete absorption of the reinoic acid.

My only advice is to be cautious. Do it slowly, maybe every other day combine the two for a week, and then if your skin isn't showing any signs of excessive irritation, use them together consecutively. =)

Have you met anyone that personally use this? I am trying to decide between using Oleda,
Skin Nouveau Carotein Nourishing & Fairness Cream,
and Fair % flawless Suntan Removal for overall body lightening my face and decolette area are pretty light but my body is about one or two shades darker

Hi Isis,

I was checking the ingredient lists for the 2 that you mentioned. The Skin Nouveau Carotein Nourshing & Fairness cream is a total waste of money. Don't even bother with that, here are the ingredients for that one:

Water (Aqua), Carrot (Daucus Carota) Extract, Carrot (Daucus Carot Sativa) Oil, Glycolic Acid, Malic Acid, Cetearly Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Glyceryl Stearate, Cellulose, Dimethicone, Carrageenan (Chondrus Crispus), Retinyl Palmitate, Absorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Tocopheryl Acetate, Methylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance (Parfum), Panthenol, Hyaluronic Acid, Citric Acid

As far as the Fair & Flawless Suntan Removal cream, well it boils down to what you really need. It doesn't contain any AHAs or exfoliants in it, so you will have to purchase either a luffa to exfoliate your body or a body exfoliating scrub/gel.

The Oleda has AHAs in it, so you get some exfoliation as well as some lightening from the kojic acid. I don't know anyone personally who has used this, I did this recommendation since the combo of AHAs and kojic acid are great and plus it's relatively affordable skin lightener. It's mild since the only lightener in it is Kojic acid, but it has glycolic acid to help exfoliate.

The Fair & Flawless does look alright, it has arbutin, sephiwhite and kojic acid. I would recommend that one, since it has 3 lighteners instead of one. You will have to exfoliate regularily though either manually (luffa) or with an AHA soap/body wash. ;)

Thanks

I guess my last question would be do you know of one that has a strong lightening content and a AHA?

The Vichy Bi White that you use looks good but it seems that I will not be able to use this on my body as it is a small tube.

Yeah, using the Vichy Bi White on your body isn't the wisest since it is in a small tube. It's designed for the face/neck area.

Dr Michelle Copeland AHA Body Smoothing Cream (Kojic acid + AHAs):

The M2 Body Refinish looks very nice. I did a recommendation of the M2 Refinish Lotion for the face and I've got a few people messaging me on how well it has made their skin - clear, even, radiant. It doesn't have lightening ingredients per se, but mandelic acid/malic acid combo does have some pigment suppressing properties.

I wish I could give first hand experience. My body skin color is the lightest part of me, so my face and neck were always the focus for me. I am very close to my body skin tone now, more than I've ever been since I was a child and even toned all over. For body lightening, I just use lightening/brightening washes and exfoliate regularily. I find that keeps my body skin even and a nice color overall.

Good luck
;)
