Product Review: Kose Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask

I recieved the Kose Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask in a skincare gift set from a great friend, and have been using it for about a month now. I can say that I am absolutley beyond impressed with this skin whitening mask! It is easily the best mask designed to lighten/brighten skin instantly IMO and I've been itching to put out a review for it.

After having a less than satisfactory experience with the Mario Badescu Whitening Mask, I kind of lost hope in commerical masks that were targeted for brightening and lightening. I turned to DIY masks like yogurt, Vitamin C and niacinamide (which are all very effective and awesome, but sometimes it's nice to have a ready-made product that has intensive skin lightening extracts in it just there for you to use, without doing any extra work or clean up).

I've tried other products in the Kose line, and have always felt that they were fantastic skin brighteners. Probably better than most US-brand or European-brand skin brighteners. After using a trial sized sample of their Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask, I am hooked for life.

The mask is creamy in texture and suppresses melanin with a concentrated blend of herbal extracts (there are A LOT) that are proven to lighten skin. The high potency of the extracts, combined with the pore penetrating abilities of alcohol allow for intensified results. Skin is left silky smooth, refined, even-toned, instantly brighter, and dark spots/freckles are significantly lighter and softer looking.

The first thing I liked about this mask is that it came with a spatula. If you've read some of my past posts about products that come in jars you know about the sanitary and product spoiling issues that can occur when constantly dipping fingers in the product. So having a spatula allowed for easy application and sanitation.

I love the texture of the mask, it isn't clay-based like the Mario Badescu Whitening Mask, instead it's thick and creamy and perfect for winter. Even with the alcohol content in the mask (which there is nothing wrong with. There is a huge misconception that alcohol is bad for your skin, it is not, it's great for oily, combination and acne prone skin types and acts as a penetration enhancer) my skin was never dried out with this, and it seemed to balance everything out.

Now time to get into the skin lightening aspect of it (which is the most important part). I applied the mask over a clean, dry face in the morning (it can be used day or night, but I prefer to use it during the day since the results are so instant and they last throughout the day). Kose recommends applying a thin layer via spatula and massaging gently over your face (micro circulation reasons). You can leave the mask on for however long you wish (it states a few minutes), I left it on for 15 minutes while doing other things (checking e-mails etc.) After the 15 minutes, I rinsed off with warm water, massaging the mask away with my fingertips and then finally splashing with cool water a couple of times.

Once towel-dried, my skin looked even better than it did after using my super simplistic niacinamide mask. I was astounded at how radiant and even my skin looked. This was after the first application on New Years day (lol). My skin was looking dull from the night before, and just instantly got brighter and it seemed to kind of soften/fade out any imperfections.

I've been using it for the entire month of January and I am convinced this product has made my skin as glowing and bright as it is now. The compliments I get on the days I use this speak for itself. This mask alone has made my skin about a little more than a half a shade lighter. That is a lot coming from a mask and in only 4 weeks.

I think this is the perfect skin brightening and skin lightening mask (I consider it both, since it brightens and lightens). It is ideal for maintenance. Since I pretty much have gotten to my goal skin tone on my face, this product is just a perfect maintenance for me. It's also very beneficial for people who need that glow and instant bright, light radiance for an event. Heck this would be an amazing mask to use on the day of a wedding for a luminous, even toned glow. I assure you people will comment or at least think in their minds (lol) what even-toned, radiant skin you have. It's really good and I am very pleased with it

The Kose Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask comes in a 150 ml/5 oz jar with a spatula. I checked online and discovered it's a little pricey, but I am a firm believer in return on investment and believe that it's worth it. Most online sites sell it for about $53.00

Here's an Amazon link:
http://www.amazon.com/Kose-Sekkisei-Herbal-Esthetic-Whitening/dp/B000FDVPMO

If you really are interested in energizing your skin care regimen, and you got the funds to get this I really recommend it. This is a skin lightening/brightening mask that actually has an effect on the skin and I just recieved my full-sized jar from ebay on Monday.

would this be a good whitening product for dry sensitive skin? If not, are there any products you would recommend for someone who is looking into whitening for the first time? I am currently using DHC 100 to lighten some of my acne marks and have seen some improvement.

Hi Sweet P

I have sensitive skin as well, but the only difference is I am oily. I thought the creaminess/richness of the mask might cause me some problems but it didn't. I can imagine for a drier skin type like yours it would definitley work in your favor.

Like I stated it's just a great addition you can add to your regimen. It definitley has given me a glow that I've never gotten so quickly from anything else. So it can work, plus it comes in a huge jar that will last for a long time if used 3-4 times a week.

The DHC 100 is great place to start. It's a good antioxidant based skin brightner, I use it still from time to time. Introducing a mask is great step in getting into skin whitening. Particular this mask. And ofcourse, daily sunscreen to protect and keep the benefits.

I would also suggest looking into something that renews/exfoliates your skin gently like an AHA product used at night (if you don't already use one).

There are a few lighteners out there that have alpha hydroxy (AHA) acids in them like DDF Holistic Lightener and the Oleda Super Skin Lightening Gel. The M2 Skin Refinish is a great AHA product with mandelic acid/malic acid that is good at breaking up pigment and evening skin color. It's strong though, but I've heard such great success stories from people who have used it.

I use Retin-A (tretinoin by prescription) at night to keep my skin exfoliated and renewed from old, dead melanin filled skin cells.

=)

Thank you so much for your help! I really love reading your blog. I have always been wary about adding retinol to my regime since I don't want to add any more redness to my skin! I recently purchased the Aloette Enzyme Restorative Peel after reading your earlier entry. I can't wait for it to arrive in the mail and try it out! I will definitely look into getting this mask as well :)

Hope the Aloette Enzyme Peel goes well for you - that is my favorite enzyme based peel. It's incredibly gentle and much different than an acid based peel. Plus it's kinda fun to use with all the dead skin/dry flaky skin falling off, lol. =D

Hi Mileena,
If I wanted to purchase one thing, would you recommend this Kose Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask, or the Aloette Restorative Enzyme Peel?
I'm trying to decide which one would be more useful...
Thank You!

Hey!

It depends entirely on what you need. Are you getting some sort of gentle exfoliant in your regimen? Like a product with AHAs (glycolic acid or lactic acid) or salicylic acid or retinoids? If you are, then you don't really *need* the exfoliation from the Aloette Restorative Enzyme Peel, because that is just an ultra gentle enzyme peel (no acid) that exfoliates the entire epidermal layer of your skin.

The Kose Sekkisei Herbal Esthetic Whitening Mask is actually a skin lightening mask. It won't exfoliate, so if you do have an exfoliant (it can be in the form of a scrub, or a leave-on serum/product, toner) then I suggest the Kose. It's wonderful, seriously I cannot say more positive things about this mask.

If you don't have any good, gentle exfoliants in your skin care regimen (and you need one since it's crucial to the process of skin lightening) then get the Aloette.

Hi!

I finally received the tube of Retin A you recommended. I've been using it every other night for about a week and haven't experienced any redness or irritation. Although this morning I did wake up with an oil slick on my face, lol. Is that normal? Also, if I haven't experienced any irritation so far does that mean it's okay to start using it every night?

February 8, 2010 at 2:49 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

lol the oiliness is normal. The first few weeks when you wake up, your skin is a bit oily since Retin-A exfoliates causes trapped sebum and such to rise up, as well as the fact that sebum production slightly increases to compensate for the loss of it. But it's no big deal and goes away after a month or so into it.

You can use it everyday and see how it goes. I still usually caution every other day for at least 2 weeks, but if you aren't getting any irritation/redness it's fine.

I should note, a lot of these precautions I do are in reference to Retin-A by Ortho Manufactuers. While all the knock off prescription versions of Retin-A on the net are decent, they are not the same as (which means not as effective as) the real prescription-only one which features very few ingredients aside from tretinoin and alcohol. So that is why I am so used to being so cautious.

Thanks for replying! The box says it is manufactured by Janssen-Cilag which is an overseas subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, so it's at least made by a reputable company. I also discovered that some people have experienced credit card fraud after ordering from Medsmex so I am definitely going to check my credit card charges frequently. I am still going to see if I can get a prescription for the brand name by Ortho Manufacturers.
Thanks again, Mileena :)

Oh I never heard about that regarding medsmex. That's terrible, the only things I've heard were positive. =/

The one from Medsmex is honestly the closest to the real thing. I know some online Canadianpharmacy sites may have versions similar, and then there is alldaychemist.com which has Retin-A, Tazorac and Differin but those have very different inactive ingredients.

Through prescription from your family doctor is the best route, but online is alright if you don't have the prescription option. ;)

Hi! I now use it about 2 times a week. For awhile in the winter I was only using it once a week, only because I was using other mask/peel treatments.

The mask can be used up to 3 times a week. It is gentle, no harsh ingredients in it and seriously it is SO good at lightening up my skin instnatnly. The glow/brightness I get from it is incredible I always get compliments on my skin whenever I use it. The results are lasting too, it alone has made my skin more even in color and much smoother. =)

Hi Mileeana,

Can this mask be used for melasma. Do you think i can benefit for my melasma with this one or no i do have acne prone skin as well and i do use retin a and vivite vibrance therapy.
Thank you

Oh yes definitley The mask actually lightens skin too. I've noticed my skin IS indeed lighter when using this, now for almost 3 months. This is my favorite mask. Ever.

With a good sunscreen everyday, retin-A and vivite, plus this it can definitley really make a mark on your melasma. Sunscreen is the most important factor though. Hormones do a play a major role too, that is the deeper issue.

Eat healthy, exercise (studies show healthy BMI reduced the risk of hormonal related issues, which includes melasma) wear good high PPD sunscreen (that is oxybenzone free) every single day, rain or shine, make sure you are getting optimal Vitamin D supplementation to compensate for the lack of sun exposure (sunscreen blocks D formation from the sun). I take 4000 mg daily. I made a post on Vitamin D, I believe back in November or December. Vitamin D has been shown to help with many skin issues.

No worries! =d

It'll definitely help in evening out your skin tone at lightening it up a bit. With things like soaps and masks, the key is to just be consistent with it. Their effect comes from cumulative usage. A few times a week applied sparingly is great. Keep up with sunscreen and it's best to follow up with a skin lightener OR some type of AHA/BHA product.

Good luck! =D

Hi there!

I was actually just wondering what the difference was between the medicated kose herbal and the regular kose herbal mask? & also which one do you use? Or that you'd recommend? By the way, I love reading your updates. Thanks for helping all your readers with their skin care regimen. Talk to you soon! Thank you again! =)

Hello Mileena!

First off I just wanted to say thank you for always updating your products.I truly do enjoy reading your pros and cons evaluation for the whitening products. Anyway, I had a question about the kose medicated herbal and non medicated herbal? What is the difference? Which do you recommend and use? Thank you and talk to you soon! =)

Hi!

Aw, thanks! I love updating and really hope to get back on it more frequently when I launch the new version of this blog and get a few things settled in my personal life (it's hard to find time nowadays) =D

I do not use the Medicated mask, I use the regular Whitening Herbal Esthetic one which has very similar ingredients plus a skin whitening powder mix of plant extracts which the medicated version does not have.

Here is a link for the version I use (the non medicated):

http://www.evecare.com/store/kose/sekkiseiherbalestheticwhiteningmask150ml5oz_2328.php

I've never tried the medicated version but it does get great reviews. I can tell you from experience the non medicated is a WONDERFUL instant brightening mask that overtime has made my skin very radiant and has faded some mottled pigment on my cheek temples. Great mask but a little pricey though.

The Neutrogena Fine Fairness Mask would be a great alternative if you are on a budget. That's an amazing high percentage niacinamide based mask.

Happy Chinese/Vietnamese New Year!

Thanks for the great in depth understanding between the two. Honestly I usually never really involve myself in reviews because I would always assume that the blogger would be too busy to answer back. I really hope that you've settled things in your personal life. No worries. Everyone has a life, you can respond when ever you have the time.

Thanks for providing thorough details. I'm really glad that you don't blog for paid advertisements. Anyway I will definitely order the Kose sekkisei non-medicated herbal esthetic whitening mask.

I also wanted to inform you that my order of the DDF brightening cleanser came in yesterday and it works wonders. I actually use the korean bath towel to on my body and face. Are you familiar with the korean bath towel? If so, is it too harsh to use on your face with the DDF cleanser? What kind of facial brush do you use?

Please excuse my plethora of questions. I hope you don't mind. I actually wanted to know what kind of whitening body/skin lotion should one use? I attached a picture of the korean bath towel I was talking about earlier on. Thank you again. I can't wait to hear your feedback. Have a marvelous day! Goodluck in the new year!

Sincerely,
Devoted Reader!

Hi!

Happy Chinese/Vietnamese New Year to you as well. Hope this year brings you closer to your dreams <33!

Thanking you SO much for reading and enjoying my blog. It means so much to me, and I'm so happy that it can help you in any way. I feel like my main objective as a blogger is always fulfilled when people tell me my blog has helped them or they get great information from it. yay! :)

The DDF Brightening Cleanser is actually my only body lightening product I use. I use it with a luffa in the shower. I lather it over my body with it and let it remain for at least 2 minutes each time I use it. The skin on my body is very fair, so I don't need lightening at all there, I mainly began using it just for my arms and decollete which has some freckles and mottle pigmentation (sun damage from tanning). It's now all lightened up mainly due to using the DDF for years. It's such a wonderful product and I am so glad you are liking it. Yay! If you find your skin gets dry (and it might during the winter season) just apply a light moisturizer or if your skin lightening serum or cream is moisturizer apply that after wards to counter any dry flakes.

Those bodyscrub towels look GREAT! Wow, I gotta get one for myself. I've been using luffa's all this time and have been look for a scrubbing cloth. This looks perfect - thank you for letting me know about this.

Of course you can use it on your neck or anywhere else. A little goes a long way - it's a massage style mask so you only need a little to get across a large surface so it'll last a good while. :)
