Product Review - Skinceuticals Phyto +

For the longest time, Skinceuticals Phyto + was my go-to skin lightener. I still have some product left in the bottle, and use it from time to time, and still love it. This product is pretty amazing, in that it not only acts as an excellent (and I mean excellent) skin lightener, but it has anti-inflammatory and anti-septic qualities which can treat a host of skin conditions (i.e. atopic dermatitis, erythema). I've mentioned before in previous posts that anti-inflammatory agents can go above and beyond just soothing and calming red, stressed skin, but can also help in the skin lightening process by guaranteeing a reduction in irritation (less irritation = less of a chance for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). Read about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in my article here: http://allaboutskinlightening.blogspot.com/2009/06/irritation-post-inflammatory.html

Skinceuticals Phyto+ is first and foremost designed as a botanical lightener with concentrated amounts of arbutin and kojic acid as well as uva ursi extract (bearberry). It also contains cucumber and thyme extract which work synergistically with the botanical lighteners to break up melanin in the skin, unify discolored, uneven tone and overall lighten the skin. It also contains other great ingrdients like hyaluronic acid which has significant hydrating, soothing and anti-aging benefits.

It comes in a dropper bottle (similar to many other Skinceutical products) and is green in color. The texture is a very fine, fast absorbing liquid that feels lightweight and absorbs rapidly (blends very well) in the skin. You only need about 2 to 4 drops to cover your whole face. It has a mild, herbal scent that isn't over powering at all.

Results are typically seen after about 6 weeks of daily usage. Full results in 8-12 weeks, depending on your skin regimen (daily use of sunscreen, some sort of exfoliant to hasten cell turnover rate etc.). I use Retin-A, so my skin is well-exfoliated nightly and I began to see results by the end of the second week. By the 5th week, the acne marks I had on the side of my face vanished and my overall skintone was just luminous. I also found that my cheeks weren't as flushed out looking as they would be otherwise by mid-day.

It can be used underneath your sunscreen in the morning (I used it this way), and you don't have to worry about waiting too long for the product to absorb since it does very quickly. It can also be used at night, or even twice a day.

I wish I could continually purchase this wonderful lightener, but the price is what forced me to look elsewhere. It runs for a steep $80, and comes in 1 oz (30 mL) bottle. Now, including shipping and handling the product just became way out of my budget. I needed something that was relatively more reasonable in price, and I could get in a local drugstore. I found it in Vichy Bi White Double Reveal Whitening Essence.

Still there is no denying what a great product this is. The little product I have left in my vial, I literally only use when I feel my skin is irritated from the cold or whatnot. It definitley awakens the radiance of my skin up. If you have the money to purchase the Skinceuticals Phyto +, I really recommend this one. Very good product.

Thanks for the recommedation, I just ordered some on Ebay. I was wondering if this is okay to use over active breakouts?

Definitley. It shouldn't cause a problem since it doesn't carry such high comedogenic ingredients.

Sometimes if I'm breaking out, I will apply a BHA (salicylic acid) like Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid over the pimples, wait 5 minutes for absorption and apply the Phyto + on top. I also like to mix it with my Retin-A gel (which clears up acne excellently) so I get a dose of pore cleaning, acne reducing as well as lightening. =)

Your welcome! Yeah my skin looks better than it has in years! I'm still not at my goal for having a completley even complexion without the freckles, but I'm getting there. It's a process ;)

I've just contacted a couple of companies that have kojic acid products (including Skinceuticals) about their percentages. Hopefully they'll reply back soon. I'll post the percentages here.

The products I recommended in the Featured Ingredient: Kojic Acid article has some high potency (although I don't know the exact percentages). C. Booths and others seem to be doing well for people who has purchased and are getting results. ;)

Hi Mileena,

I've been using differin for quite some time now and I recently bot Phyto gel under your recommendation :) Should I layer Phyto under or over differing?

Great blog btw :)

Thank you =D

It doesn't matter really. You can layer the Phyto + first and then apply the Differin on top, or apply the Differin first and apply Phyto+ on top.

You can also even mix them together directly in your palm, but generally is easier to do. All have the same effect as both are being infused in the skin.

Hi Mileena!

You have your skin science just so perfect! Its really phenomenal to read your blog. You answer a million questions of mine! Thank You!

I know you have explained layering times and times over in your blog, but I still have a question.
For dry skin: where in the layering do you fit in a good moisturizer? i.e for a regimen like:
AM
Wash, vitc, lightener, sunscreen, foundation.
PM
Cleanse, wash, lightener, retinoid.

In both AM and PM's cylce, where should the moisture fit in?
Also can you please recommend a good non comedogenic one?

One other question:
Will you also explain the science behind picking a right foundation as makeup (till one gets even tone). A foundation that will fit well in the skin lightening regimen. Will you please recommend one to us? Please?

Regards
-Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Aw, thanks for liking my blog. I'm glad it could help <333

I have begun to use moisturizer again now that it's getting cold and dry. I usually only moisturize my dry spots and not my entire face but if your whole skin gets dry then moisturize all over.

For the AM:

Moisturizing usually occurs after vitamin c serums and botanical lighteners and always underneath sunscreen (so before sunscreen).

Basically before sunscreen. Sunscreen should be last in terms of skin care. Then wait 10 mins to allow for the sunscreen's protective coating to form/settle on the epidermis. Then apply foundation.

For the PM:

It really depends on what your PM treatment is. If it's a lightener and a retinoid, use your moisturizer after your lightener and before your retinoid. For people with acne/aging issues, it's best to apply the retinoid first on bare skin, let that penetrate for a few mins (it travels through the stratum corneum very quick). This ensures the tretinoin is in the skin without being diluted by other active ingredients. Then layer your moisturizer. and then lightener on top.

As far as foundation is concerned - there really isn't a specific one that is best for a skin lightening one. It's hard to find a shade since using sunscreen, lighteners, antioxidants and retinoids/AHAs does alter your skin tone constantly so finding one can be tricky.

Try looking for one that matches your undertone and by 2 shades from that (if that's an option). Then if you can't find a certain or your skin tone is kind of in the middle of the two shades, just mix the two together in your palm and apply.

If you use a sunscreen with avobenzone it's best to avoid foundations/powders with titanium dioxide/zinc oxide as these are generally uncoated minerals within foundations and interfere with avobenzone's composition.

I hope I helped!

Hi Mileena,

It is very kind of you to reply!
would you please recommend a moisturizer too?

Also have you ever gotten into the science of expiry dates of cosmetic products? If one is using a foundation which has expired, is that really harmful?

I love the La Roche Posay Toleraine Fluid. Lovely, lightweight moisturizer that is good for sensitive skin types.

Olay Regenerist Fragrance Free Serum is nice too if you aren't sensitive to silicones.

Expiry dates are really blown out of proportion. Generally for makeup they can last up to 1 year. I would say to stop using it after that just for sanitary reasons. If the makeup has an active ingredient like plant extracts then those can degrade overtime due to oxidative stress/constant air/light exposure but that's not really an issue and that too should last up to a year.

If you notice a significant change in your makeup (change in texture/drastic change in color) then it's best to give it up. They last for awhile though (1-2 years).

Hi Joyful888,

Yes it can. Skinceuticals Phyto+ is great because the ingredients it has are pretty neutral and do conflict with most other active ingredients out there.

I have mixed (layered and literally mixed within my palm) lots of other creams, serums, AHAs with Phyto+. It's one of my all time favorite products!
