Product Review - DHC Acerola 100

I've raved about DHC's Acerola line over at the Bright Skin Forum awhile ago. It's actually a very effective skin brightening/vitamin c line of skin treatments that utilizes acerola berries which are heavily concentrated in antioxdiants.

DHC's Acerola 100 is the most concentrated of all the products in this range. It's a light, orangey-pink liquid that comes in a 30ml (1 fl. oz.) pump dispenser glass bottle. I really wish they changed the glass bottle design, because if you drop it - it will shatter! It does have a little bit of a maple syrup fragrance - nothing too offensive though. Also because it is in a liquid form, you only need about the size of a pea to cover your entire your face as it glides/blends well across the skin.

I first heard about it through a couple of magazine articles stating that this product is a huge hit in Japan, and does wonders in fading stubborn freckles and acne marks. I ordered it online for about $22.00 (which isn't that bad, since the great results over ride the cost IMO).

The product takes awhile to work (started seeing visible fading of color in about week 4), but I can honestly say that this is one of the best mild Vitamin C/antioxidant based skin brighteners out there (no irritation whatsoever). It's main effect is that it lightens discolorations very well and really does (as it claims) give the skin a beautiful, luminous glow. If you are looking for a product that will take your skin a step further in terms of luminosity and eveness, then this is the product to get. Many skin lighteners out there (Makari) will lighten the skin, but it will make it appear sallow and pale. This product, while it may not lighten to an extreme, certainly brightens and fades discolorations and marks wonderfully and definitley will give you an enhanced brightness to your skin (which is better than anything like Makari can offer). I recieved so many compliments whenever I used this on my skin. It was in the middle of using this product that I realized it was alright for me not to use foundation since I didn't need it anymore. I could also use this product all year, since being in a liquid form, it is really good for oily or combination skin types in that it's not a thick, heavy cream. It ever so slightly moisturizes.

It's recommended to use this under your sunscreen during the daytime (I usually recommend this because antioxidants strengthen sunscreen and protect against UVA rays on their own), but it can also be worn as a night treatment. Acerola 100 is designed to act as a Vitamin C serum. It brightens, lightens, fades, smoothes and plumps up skin.

If you really want to get the most of the DHC's fantastic Acerola line, I suggest purchasing this one as well as the DHC Acerola Gel to layer on top of this. Both equally lightweight, affordable and together pack a huge antioxdiant/skin lightening punch. DHC Acerola products can be ordered via their website: http://www.dhccare.com/. It can also be purchased through many other online vendor sites and I've seen it at various department stores as well as Sephora.

Hi! Thank you liking my blog, I really appreciate it. <3

The entire DHC acerola line is marketed as a skin brightening/antioxidant line. But IMO I definitley saw skin lightening happening in my chest area. I would say with that and the gel you should see get about 1 to 1 and a half shade lighter overall. Remember skin lightening is very gradual, it takes time. Make judgements by the end of week 4. Visible results shouldn't come by at least the beginning of week 6.

I always say to give skin lightening/brightening products 6-8 weeks before making judgements on whether it is a good lightener or brightener.

Also assuming you are wearing a good sunscreen everyday and incorporating a gentle, effective exfoliation treatment in your regimen - getting a shade lighter with these 2 products can definitley be done.

The glow I get from Acerola 100 is amazing. Good luck. ;)

Once a day, everyday. By the beginning of the second week I started seeing the glow, and my skin became brighter. Actually fading of scars, dark spots came week 4.

Things for some reason always work faster with Vitamin C based products. I'm guessing it's the antioxidant effect which is key to skin lightening. =)

Hi can you suggest any good effective exfoliating products please?

Depends on what your skin prefers: manual or chemical/acid based exfoliants?

For manual exfoliants (so scrubs and microdermabrasion) I like:

Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion + Peel Kit
The Body Shop Vitamin C Scrub
Proactiv Deep Cleansing Wash

For chemical exfoliants (which I much more prefer. I like):

Retin-A gel
Makeupartistschoice Lactic Acid Peel 40%
Alpha Hydrox 12% Peel
Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid
Yogurt + Asprin Mask

Any exfoliant will do. A lot of people like peels and leave-on AHA products. If you are looking for a scrub product, I would avoid St. Ives since it can cause micro tears in the skin (the beads are sharp and not synthetic/rounded like the Proactiv one). Any scrub will do though, I heard the Neutrogena Deep Clean inviograting one is a nice synthetic beaded one.

Most of my exfoliation comes from Retin-A gel.

=)

What's the difference between this and the Acerola Gel? I'm getting confused now lol :)

lol it's confusing I know. The Acerola Gel I believe is more of a moisturizer while the Acerola 100 is like a toner-treatment.

Hi,

Freckles are a direct result of excessive sun exposure. Perhaps your sunscreen isn't protecting you as much as you'd like or your skin needs to be protected?

I'd suggest putting in a good sunscreen like Sofina or Biore UV Cut Milk.

DHC Acerola 100 is wonderful. It does lighten freckles very well - on me for sure! It does come in an entire line. Using the entire line does offer stronger results so it's worth a shot. I suggest using the Acerola 100 first to see if you like it (4 weeks). If you do, get the entire regimen and see how your skin fares. :)
