Skin Lightening Myth: Rice Water

If you ever searched an Asian beauty forum, chances are you have read or heard about the use of rice water as a skin care treatment. People all over the world use rice water on their skin for different reasons. Apparently the 'myth' is that rice water is supposed to whiten the skin, as well as soften and treat various ailments like acne and eczema.

I actually knew about these claims that rice water can be a skin lightener for a long time. I first learned about it from examining the SK-II skin whitening line which has rice water essence. I didn't know that the connection between skin lightening and rice water was so popular though. Much like the other skin lightening myth I wrote about (jojoba oil), I found a spectrum of commentary regarding the issue. Some people said it made their skin go from really tan to a pale complexion, or that it is their favorite skin lightening treatment. Others stated that it softened their skin, but no real visible change in skin tone or luminousity was seen. And ofcourse, there are people who claim it did nothing at all for them.

So sifting through the various information I decided to look at the properties of rice water to make a sound judgement. Rice (or rice water) has a lot of vitamins and nutrients within it. A lot of these vitamins/minerals are leaked out into the water, and therefore can be useful to the skin. There is no denying that. Rice water has some trace elements of Ferulic Acid (antioxidant) and allantoin (anti-inflammatory). Rice is also a natural starch that can exfoliate the skin if used in a paste or mask.

I'm not exactly sure where the skin lightening element is in rice water. I am assuming it is from the mild antioxidant and soothing properties? I'm sure that can create a brighter look overtime if used consistently. Also people cleanse with rice water, so they are using a facial sponge or just massaging their face with it which can stimulate micro-circulation which gives a glow. Also if people are cleansing or exfoliating with rice water, (and also the fact that is a starch which can mop up sebum) their skin can appear 'lighter' or 'brighter' since cleansing oxidized sebum can give that look. I wrote about Oxidation & Skin Lightening awhile ago. It's a very true concept that sometimes gives the 'illusion' that something is lightening your skin when technically it is not.
A lot of people use rice water just by splashing it on their face. They pour water into a small bowl of rice, wait 30 minutes to and hour, pour the water out and apply it like a toner directly to their face. I also found other people really like to use it as a mask; they grind up rice and apply like it paste, with some rice water added in the mix for easier application. Apparently this helps to lighten their skin and even out the skin tone.

I was searching for some studies done on rice water, and whether or not it can be a valid skin lightening treatment and I couldn't find any concrete evidence proving that it can affect melanin production or tyrosinase. Yes, there is the bit about having some antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties but there is no direct connection between melanin content and rice water.

So in the case of rice water being a skin lightener? It's a no. Not true.

I will say though however I found some research found in the Archives of Dermatology and Venereology, that rice starch can topically help with eczema and various inflammatory issues.

Hi,

Yes you can do it that way: BHA, Makari and Retin-A. You can also use the BHA in the daytime underneath your sunscreen. A lot of people find that helps them tolerate sunscreen better (especially if they are oily skinned) since the BHA cleans out pores which allows for less chance of a sunscreen clogging your pores.

Either way, it is effective.

Makari Body Milk can be used on the face. A lot of people on the Bright Skin Forum use it on their face and get great results with it.

How is the Night Cream treating you? I used that way back (4 years ago) and my skin just loathed it. Hopefully it's working well for you.

Hi mileena,

u did great article on rice water myth. 3years back i used a fairness cream from oriflame which has rice water extract. Even using it for 2months i did't find any difference nor my mother. Ofcource its totally a mith. And also the nutrient content in rice water is to low to show any result. Ok rice powder mask can be used as a scrub but many other good options ar there.
Mileena can u plz tell using hydrogen peroxide Fem bleach have any ill effect on skin over time. I use it twice a month and really like its instant whitening effect which last long with proper sun protection

Hi Nitesh!

Thanks for liking the article.

I don't recommend the use of hydrogen peroxide as a skin lightener. I've wrote about it here:

For the comment about the melasma and acne,

You need to first figure out the root of your acne. A flareup is is an isolated incident. Have you suffered from acne before?

In the last 7 months since you started breaking out what did you use during the time of the flareup? Perhaps one of those products or ingredients in those products are contributing and prolonging the problem.

Does your doctor want you to use the laser for your melasma or the acne?

You can use benzoyl peroxide, I wouldn't necessarily put it on your melasma patches though (since it is a pro-oxidant which can cause some pigmentation problems and potentially worsen your melasma). BP is effective at treating acne and can be used along side a retinoid.

Retin-A micro is not the same thing as tretinoin gel (Retin-A gel). Retin-A gel is better tolerated, has very ingredient and is very effective. That would be a better option, ask your doc to fill out a prescription for Retin-A gel over Retin-A micro.

The Bp can be used either during the day under sunscreen (you must wear sunscreen! now you are using retin-a micro and benzoyl peroxide your skin needs all the protection it can get daily) or at night underneath your Retin-A (you can spot treat with the BP).

If you are planning on getting pregnant though, you cannot use Retin-a or an rx retinoid. Accutane is isotretinoin (oral retinoid) and retin-a is tretinoin (topical retinoid). Both shouldn't be used if you are pregnant.

BHA and BP can be good options for your. BHA products like Stridex pads or Paula['s Choice 2% BHA Liquid can really help.

Good luck

You must wear sunscreen regardless if you are using clindamycin or a retinoid to prevent darkening of your melasma.

Clindamycin does make skin sun sensitive since it is a potent benzoyl peroxide treatment (pro oxidants due create sensitivity).

It's an effective treatment though. Many people get relief from it.

They both can be used at the same time. Clindamycin first and Retin-A sparingly on top. No waiting time.

It can also be done the other way, Clindamycin and Retin-A, the two don't interact in any way ingredient wise. It's up to and each way will work the same.

Hi Mileena

The Makari Night cream is giving me occasional breakouts, thats the reason why i wanted to switch to other lighteners...so i was wondering if i can use Makari body milk or use a Paula's Choice bha along with Makari night cream.

After my MUAC lactic acid peel can i follow it up with Bioderma? i am asking this since it has a significant amount of glycolic acid so was not sure.

Do i need to pruchase PC2% BHA Gel or PC 2% BHA Liquid?

Thanks

Hi. What is the best and fastest regimen for body lightening

Hi Nitesh,

you can't get access to the article? hmmm...that's strange. I'll check the link.

What I basically said in it was hydrogen peroxide can be damaging to the skin *overtime* since it is a pro-oxidant (opposite of antioxidant. Antioxidants fend off free radicals which can create wrinkles and increased pigmentation. Vitamin C is one of the most popular antioxidants that helps to lighten skin).

I don't recommend hydrogen peroxide usage long term. You are really damaging the integrity of your skin.

Yes 0.025% tretinoin is Retin-A. Retin-A is just a product name. There are several generic forms that contain tretinoin and they are all good.

Body lightening like facial lightening is a combination approach. So I recommend:

- skin brightening/skin lightening body soap like Dermaline Kojic Acid Papaya Soap or Likas Papaya Soap. When lathering up on your body, let it soak for 2 minutes each time. Overtime it will show results.

- sunscreen on body parts being exposed to the sun

- body lightener like Makari Body Beautifying Milk or an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) based body lotion.

- Time. It takes time to lighten the body, but it can be done with this regimen.

Hi Nitesh,

treating dark circles is tricky because they can be genetic not just caused by sun damage. Plus they are more than just pigmentation issues, they have to do with thinness of the skin, the density of the skin, blood capillaries etc.

My best advice is to be gentle with your eye area (not scrubbing there). Use a vitamin c serum like La roche posay active c eyes or even a DIY vitamin C serum (if you do this, make sure to use a moisturizer on top since the DIY vitamin c serum can be drying). But La roche posay active c eyes is by far the best treatment for dark circles.

Make sure you are putting sunscreen around your eyes to prevent sun damage.

Lightening the lips is SO hard. I think for men especially since they can't use nude lipstick or colors to cover up. Exfoliating regularily (some people use a toothbrush or others their regular facial scrub on their lips) helps keep the lips renewed. Keep them hydrated at night as well, you can use your lightener sparingly on your lips but that can only do so much. Lightening the lips is still something that is still difficult to treat. I also suggest wearing a chapstick during the day (once a day application is fine) that has SPF in it to prevent lips from darkening. Especially if you start regularily exfoliating your lips.

Good luck Nitesh
