Skin Lightening Myth: Benzoyl Peroxide Leads To Acne Marks

It's pivotal for me to put out this statement first: Benzoyl peroxide is a very effective acne treatment. There is no doubt that it can treat all types of acne (whiteheads, cystic etc.) in a rapid amount of time.

I need to state this because I know a lot of people use benzoyl peroxide and it is one of the only ingredients that help with their acne. Honestly if something is working for you - stick with it.

That's my little disclaimer for this post.

Now onto the real reason why I am blogging about this. I've mentioned a few times on Bright Skin Forum, in comments and in messages that benzoyl peroxide is not something I usually recommend. I'm not against using it entirely (hence why I made the disclaimer) it's good to exhaust other treatments like salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, or rx retinoids to treat acne first. Why? Simply because they are just better for your skin.

Benzoyl Peroxide is a pro-oxidant. The total opposite of an anti-oxidant (vitamin c). It is anti-bacterial and actually works at removing acne through its oxidative properties.

The problem is, since it is a pro-oxidant it attracts free radical damage. Free radicals can trigger excess melanin production and accelerate the aging process of the skin. The cellular damage caused by free radicals often times are directly related to hyperpigmentation and acne marks.

Acne marks in particular. Many people who use benzoyl peroxide leave-on treatments like Proactiv find that it clears up their acne but leaves them with mottled skin texture and acne marks (and acne scars). The acne marks from BP usage can be red or dark (I wrote more extensively on the difference between the two in How To Treat Acne Marks). They tend to be very stubborn to treat because if you are continuing to use benzoyl peroxide, you are prolonging their existence.

The entire acne healing process is slowed down with BP usage. It is directly linked to the free radical drawing elements of the peroxide.

Some people argue that using topical antioxidants in your regimen can offset the effects, and that is true to an extent. As long as they are not used at the same time (so benzoyl peroxide used underneath a vitamin c serum is useless. They cancel each other out).

All the studies and evidence regarding the oxidative/damaging properties of BP center on leave-on products. Benzoyl Peroxide based cleansers slip off the radar since they are not present on the skin for a long period of time. Their act is instantaneous bacteria killing. Once rinsed off, it shouldn't interfere with anything unless the cleanser leaves behind a film or residue which is a problem in itself since cleansers like this lead to clogged pores anyway.

There was a time where people thought benzoyl peroxide can lighten or bleach out the skin. The reason being since it is very similar to hydrogen peroxide in nature, it can cause an instant whitening effect. Also people connected it with the fact that BP can bleach out hair and clothes.

There is no skin bleaching or skin whitening effect of benzoyl peroxide.

So, the myth on whether it contributes to acne marks is true. The skin lightening element is not.

Still I want to end this off by saying, if you are using BP and it works for you - just wear sunscreen to protect your skin. I'm not anti-BP, I'm just stating a drawback that it has.

The net is filled with resources and published studies proving the oxidative/free radical pooling aspects of benzoyl peroxide. Here is just one.

I'll be writing an article on skin lightening for men soon. Men's skin is different in texture which does play a slight role in how a regimen is built and approached.

Hello prince, good news is i'm also a man... maybe a boy ;) thats not too obvious isnt it?? :) AAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Hahaha! Hi mileena! you know, its really fun to do this and that in the skin-lightening process :D ive just received my jicamas and lemons from ebay (actually... my mom) and ive tried the jicama. i squeezed that like hell coz its so watery (thought it was like rough but not) and of course the so called back to nature isnt something that gives instant result :) hey ho! basically i wanna inform ("Do i ask?" haha :D) you that i wanna change my Acnes thats oldie old with the new one. Umm before i enlightened myself with skin care information i always did something stupid (in the point of view of skin care) like putting my sunscreen near sunlight... does it matter?? Uh ive been waiting it to be empty but it seems like it keeps producing itself. Blahaha i mean we must shake it and theres like a klick-klock sound similiar to that old Tipp-Ex you know it? and the fluid comes... ahhh... yeahh... WHAT IS IT?????? no no.

On Monday ill use my first hommad lemon toner-like water!! Well i just wanna know if i pour yeaahhh lemon juice from a small lemon inside a small jar-like something (ex vit.C jar-like something) and then i add water (simply water, i want to use rose water as an addition but im lazy to go to supermarket) after the hardship ill put that inside refridgerator n i wonder if i can (not could, plz!) store it for more than 1 day (2 days or more, ok maybe just 2 days). I knew it has vit.C there :D :D so it needs time at least 10 or 15 minutes till the PH is normal then i can apply my niacinamide thing... its still ok to use sunscreen RIGHT after the lemony isnt it? bcz i read another article form you stating that you should wait. Its like i shoud decide which one i should believe, the one from You or the dark side of You ;)

And i just heard this heart-rending statement: beauty is not painless. Aaahhhh!!! I know, madam, i know but cmon u dont know how much retinoid has killed me :( then in fact ive been using it again for 3 or 4 nights... til now... (its stupid, i admit) its good as penetration enhancer and its not too strong on top of skin lightener! i like it, eventhough its also cream-based and so is the lightener :( i dont care, i like it :p Now how if i wanna use my lemony at night? should i wait after applying it if i want to apply my toner (Queen's Charm, watch out!) and then lightener? and can i apply retinoid? im just afraid if its gonna be too irritating.

Wooaaaaww, its really tiring to type this all. i wonder how you could finish all those articles :D good news is im in front of a computer, time to face the modernization :D :D ("So, do you wear leopard skin everyday? good i want one, its totally expensive on the net")

Hey Randy!

Ah, so you are a boy. How great is that? I think I like you even more now ;)

Putting sunscreen near the sun won't do any harm, unless the sun actually overheats the bottle (the bottle becoming 35 degrees celcius). Always apply sunscreen BEFORE being exposed to the sun.

For the vitamin c mixture, any bottle will do. You can even get those spray top lids from the store so you can spray it directly on your face or on a cotton pad. Or you can just pour it out directly and apply with your fingertips.

I suggest to use this lemon/water/rosewater mixture every OTHER day to prevent any risks of irritation. It's exfoliating too since it is acidic so it's best this way.

If you make a lot, you can store it in your fridge or in a cool, dark place in your room for up to 2 days. I suggest making very little each time so it's fresh. That ensures a fresh amount of L-ascorbic acid is being absorbed.

You can use sunscreen right after the lemon toner. The waiting time only applies to vitamin c and niacinamide directly together.

Well, since you are alternating you can use the lemon toner one night and the next night use your regular toner. OR apply the regular toner first (since it has BHA right?) and the lemon toner 15 minutes later (pH has to rebalance). You can do it like that too.

Lightener can be applied right away as well as retinoid. be careful, vitamin C + retinoid = irritation so that is why I always prefer daytime usage of vitamin c.

LOL, no I do not wear leopard skin everyday. And you did type a lot, almost as much as me =)

lol Randy, I promise I will post the man-oriented one. Probably Thursday. Life's been handing me a lot of lemons lately =P

I LOVE that you are a boy though. It's great to connect with guys who are proactiv about skin care. I think I always knew you were a guy but I don't like to 'assume' anything about my readers.
