How To Get Rid Of Acne Marks Part 2

Fading acne marks (whether they are red or dark/purple acne marks) is a fairly simple solution. The most difficult aspect about the whole process is dealing with time. It takes time to undo a hyperpigmented skin state, even if it is a result of simple irritation.

For me, the ultimate treatment is this:

- vitamin C (typically in the form of L-ascorbic acid). There is lots of research showing topical antioxidants like pure vitamin c can fade and completely lighten/even out acne marks incredibly well. Even better if coupled with Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid (Skinceuticals C+E Ferulic). Unfortunatley not all skin types can tolerate vitamin E (acne prone specifically) but using a plain vitamin c serum is still very beneficial.

I find vitamin C is the ultimate in fading red acne marks (Vichy Bi White did a great job at this).

- Exfoliation. Typically chemical exfoliation like a peel or alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, mandelic and malic acid are all highly effective but I have preference for lactic acid in regards to pigmentation concerns since it has melanin inhibiting properties of its own and is more gentle). Used once or twice a week it can do wonders.

Retinoids also do a hell of a job in lightening up dark (brown or purple) acne marks because of the epidermal sloughing action.

- A good sunscreen worn daily. I mentioned in the original article that a lot of people forgo sunscreen when they get a breakout. That lack of sun protection can lead to an acne mark if you are exposed to the sun for a long period of time. Sunscreen is a great preventative and treatment (compliments vitamin c and exfoliation).

These are my 3 gold standards in treating/fading acne marks.

Generally plant based skin lighteners don't do much for acne marks. I read on many message boards where people complain skin lighteners like Makari lighten the overall complexion but don't do much for acne marks. That is because these botanical skin lightening ingredients rarely have the ability to penetrate to the level needed to correct the irregularity or reaction that caused the hyperpigmentated legion. The melanin production in a hyperpigmentated region is abnormal in comparison to skin that is surrounding it.

Some people see an uneven lightening (overall complexion lightening quickly while acne marks fade gradually). With vitamin c and exfoliation treatments, this is not the case. The lightening effect is gradual and generally pure vitamin c is in a small enough molecule to penetrate deep into the skin and correct the root issue. Vitamin C is also exfoliating on it's own so it is a 2-in-1 treatment.

Hi Mileena i am Kulpreet from India. Since you have great information on skin care I just wanted to share my skin care regimen with you.

Skin Tone: Fair
Skin Type: Combination, acne prone and sensitive.

Morning:
Cleanse with cetaphil cleanser.
Apply clearz cream that has 2.5% vitamin c and 0.75% kojic acid.
Apply nuetrogena ultrasheer dry touch sun block spf 45.

Evening:
Cleanse with cetaphil cleanser
Apply Retino A ( tretinoin cream)
After 30 Min apply clearz cream( Vitamin c and kojic acid)

My problem is that i am in a marketing job that involves lot of traveling and going out in the sun.Though i apply my sunscreen 3 to 4 times in a day and also carry an umbrella but still my skin is becoming darker. Is it because of kojic acid as i have heard it makes your skin more sensitive to sun. Is my regimen fine or should i change it. Can u pls help me.

Hi Kulpreet :)

Kojic acid does make the skin more sun sensitive but that is the case with most acidic ingredients like pure vitamin c (ascorbic acid) and alpha hydroxy acids. Retinoids (Retin-A) also make the skin sun sensitive. But it shouldn't be an issue when one wears sunscreen daily. Plus you use an umbrella ;)

You do not need to re-apply sunscreen throughout the day if the sunscreen is stable. The Neutrogena Dry Touch SPF 45 is stable and shouldn't break down in sunlight. It should protect you all day so once a day application in the morning is fine.

Everything looks good, except I would suggest not using the Clearz Cream in the daytime. Save it for the night with your retinoid. See how things work like this.

To make the most out of your sunscreen and get the best protection out of it, I wrote an article on sunscreen etiquette/rules. It's worth a look if you haven't checked it out:

Hey Mileena, I'm not sure if you know the answer to this but I thought I might as well ask. Is it okay to have both Vit C and Glycolic acid applied to the skin at the same time? I currently use MD Forte III moisturiser and also Skinceuticals AOX 20. I usually just alternate between the two and only use one for any given night cause I was worried that they didn't together and would "cancel" each other out or something. Any ideas if that's what they do? Or do they work well together? I was thinking of applying the MD Forte and then a few minutes later once it was absorbed, to apply the Skinceuticals AOX 20 serum. Any help would be great, thanks!
