Making Makari Work For Sensitive or Acne Prone Skin

A string of messages and e-mails from people telling me that Makari is giving them amazing skin lightening results has prompted me to write about this. I am so thrilled to hear this for several reasons!

I just tweeted about this, but today I was thinking about my initial experience with Makari Night Cream and the Makari Caviar Cream. When I used these products, I did not have a proper regimen that ensured clear pores and regular cell turnover (exfoliation). I think I used a scrub like two or three times a week and that was it. Mind you, I have oily, acne prone skin so using a scrub wasn't enough to help keep my pores clear.

I know these things now. However that doesn't take away from the fact that Makari Night Cream and Caviar Cream are just not desgined for sensitive, or acne prone skin. Their just not - the ingredients are too emollient.

But these success stories got me thinking. With the rock-solid regimen I currently have, perhaps my skin could tolerate Makari? With all the knowledge I know about comedogenic ingredients and importance of clear pores, Makari may have second chance with me.

I really emphasize on 'may try it' since I am unbelievably content with my current regimen. I mean it is perfect in all aspects - I hardly ever break out (from products that don't clog my pores, as well as rx retinoid nightly), I have maintained an even skin tone, and I see a lightening of all my freckles. So I probably won't tamper with it, but I do know that if I tried Makari I could definitley go beyond my natural birth color.

In order to make comedogenic products actually 'work' for your skin means you need a regimen that has gentle yet consistent exfoliation. Constant clearing of pores and keratinocytes either manually or through a retinoid/BHA/AHA is key.

Specifically for acne prone skin types, BHA (salicylic acid) is great at clearing pores. The best BHA product out there is without a doubt the Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid. I've mentioned it several times. It is fabulous, works great under sunscreen and actually clears up acne (and prevents it too). It is one of the only salicylic acid products out there that has the correct pH, so it actually is used by the skin. It actually exfoliates within the pores, instead of just sitting on your skin causing irritation.

A lot of people who use high PPD sunscreen (you know the really greasy European ones) almost always use an rx retinoid at night and/or a BHA product to keep their pores clean, so they can actually use these heavy duty sunscreen without risk of clogged pores.

Four out of the six people who I have been communicating with use the Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid alongside Makari Day Cream or Night Cream and find that they are not breaking out, and in fact it's strengthening their skin lightening results. Obviously cleaner, exfoliated pores = better efficacy of a skin lightener. Acne marks, dark to black spots and other hyperpigmentation issues are all treated by exfoliants alone to some degree.

I think on top of using an rx retinoid, or BHA/AHA product, limiting the application to every other day or even 4-5 times a week can help. Since having properly exfoliated skin allows for greater absorption of the product, you can get away with using a skin lightener like Makari just a few times a week and still get results. It obviously won't be as strong or fast, but it does decrease the risk of a breakout, especially if you are also keeping your pores clear at the same time. You have to be consistent but this method can work.

Even though I credit most of my acne clearing from Retin-A gel, I never fail to give credit to AHAs or BHAs since they are great as well.

I've yet to try a BHA product as good as PC's 2% BHA Liquid. For Canadians - Neostrata has some great AHA/BHA toners but still they do not seem to work as well as the Paula's Choice. In the summer time I occasionally like to use a BHA product either in the AM or PM to help keep my pores extra clean. I tried the SkinBiology LacSal serum and liked it, but found it to be a bit greasy. So, in all honesty Paula's Choice BHA Liquid reigns supreme in salicylic acid treatments.

I think with either an rx retinoid, AHA product or a BHA product, Makari has the ability to be tolerated and useful. Of course this may not work for everybody, but hearing these positive results from other people got me fascinated and excited. There is no doubt Makari is a strong skin lightener that works at lightening skin up in shades, but unfortunatley not all of us can withstand it. Introducing an rx retinoid , AHA (or even better) a BHA can help if you are prone to acne.

Hi! The Liquid is the best. The Liquid is like a toner, it's simple to use and has a better finish. The Lotion is more of a moisturizer with BHA, and the Gel is a less hydrating moisturizer.

With the warmer weather approaching, I suggest the Liquid. It's great. ;)

Dear,
I just got myself 4 bars of Diana stalder papaya kojic soap and in the packaging they have this warning to not use any other exfoliating agents such as a retinol or anything with AHa or BHA... now in my current skin care regimen I have 'Retin A' and "lacto Calamine lotion ' which contains AHA..I really like to continue to use them but the papaya soap warning kind of confused me...what should I do? Do i use all of them ...or skip my retinol and aha?? ( dont want to :( ) ..help help help ....

Is this worth trying if I already use products like Skinceuticals Phyto+, NIA24 and Differin?

I always see people posting about amazing results with this but most of these people have been using cheaper, not very well formulated products prior to using Makari.

What do you think? Would you use it again?

Hi pp!

That warning is simply that - just a warming. Since the Diane Stadler Papaya Kojic Acid Soap is mildy exfoliating on it's own, the folks at Diane Stadler recommend to be extra cautious.

In this case they are warning to not use an rx retinoid, AHA or BHA product altogether.

Most other exfoliating products have this warning too. You don't have to follow it because it's just a caution to irritation.

Obviously using a lot of exfoliants at once can potentially cause irritation depending on your skin type. Generally most people can handle a lot. I would continue to use whatever products you regularily use after using the soap. Just monitor your skin and see how it is reacting to things. If you feel excessive dryness or even some little irritation forming, pull back a little. Perhaps alternate days with Retin-A and lacto calamine lotion. (so perhaps not daily use of Retin-A).

Use the BHA before the vitamin c.

Allow your skin a full 10-15 minutes to absorb the BHA and neutralize it's pH. Then apply the vitamin c on top. Sunscreen can be applied immediatley following the C.

It's important to watch out for the pH issues.

Acne can be many things. Bumps, whiteheads, cysts.

A lot of times bumps (tiny ones that are reddish) can be from irritation (harsh cleansing, harsh products etc.) If they are skin colored bumps they are clogged pores. BHA can really help with this.

Hey,

stick with the Skinceuticals Phyto+, NIA24 and Differin regimen. Those are fantastic products that can work together to pull off great results.

Makari is still the strongest skin lightener out there (IMO, it's subjective to everyone) but this post was aimed for people who are not using any lighteners at the moment are interested in trying Makari with a different spin.

Completley use your products, then form a solid opinion. Those are great products, they don't lighten as fast as Makari but they also don't potentially clog pores so stick with them.

Hi Mileena, recently i just came to know your blog. I must say it is very informative. Is it true vit c serum and retin a cant be use together. Does taking BCP cause melasma? I have been taking it for about a year but recently i have notice some dark patches on my cheeks. I suspect it is melasma.
=(
Thanks for your help, Carina

thanks for the answer. yes, they are skin colored bumps. can i spot treat these bumps with the BHA liquid instead of whole face?

Hi Carina,

Vitamin C + retinoids at the same time isn't recommended. Reason being is they are both potentially irritating, and together it can be a bit much. There are people who can tolerate it, but vitamin c should be used during the day since it has anti-free radical properties, instant brightening as well as the ability to strengthen UVA protection when underneath a sunscreen.

BCP doesn't cause melasma for everyone. Tampering with hormones excessively can trigger melasma in many people, but certainly not all. I've been on BCP before with no pigmentation drawbacks or melasma. It really depends on the person. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation or have gotten melasma patches in the past, then it is probably best to avoid BCP.

Melasma is tricky to treat. I understand that. The best place to start is use a high PPD sunscreen (good protection). Bioderma MAX Fluide, or La Roche Posay sunscreens are very good at preventing further darkening of the melasma.

Using a vitamin c serum might not be useful to a melasma patch since the root of melasma is hormonal based. Sepiwhite is an ingredient I would look for when looking for a skin lightener. Sepiwhite lightens skin by inhibiting hormonal response.

Check out the Kinerase Photofacial line (normal = combination skin) or the Environ Evenescence Clarifying Lotion (oily skin).

Those skin colored bumps are clogged pores. You can spot treat them with the BHA Liquid, but I would use it all over just to *prevent* any clogged pores from happening anywhere. =D

Hi! whats the diff btw using the BHA liquid and say, Queen Helene Mink mask? Dont they both clear out pore and treat clogged pores? can i simply use mask to achieve same goal?

June 11, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

They are both highly effective at treating clogged pores and preventing them.

The BHA Liquid is a BHA product - salicylic acid based. It exfoliates within the pores to help clear them out.

The Queen Helen Mint Julep Mask is a fantastic clay based mask. It does not exfoliate, instead it cleans pores through kaolin clay - which soaks up trapped excess sebum, keratinocytes and p.bacteria out of pores.

Both are great and you can choose either, but the BHA Liquid can be used daily where as the clay mask is best used twice or three times a week since it can be very drying.

Hi Mileena

I apply Retin_a first wait for 3 or4 mins and apply my Makari Night Cream it works for me like that, i noticed that u r advising to apply Makari first followed by Retina after a few mins.
If i want to use PC 2% BHA Liquid , then it would be BHA followed by Retin-A and then finally the Night Cream, can i do this?

Thanks

Hi!

I usually recommend the lightener first, then the retinoid afterwards BUT either way is fine. If it works for you by using the Retin-A first and then Makari on top then that is fine.

That way can be just as good (or maybe even better) since it allows the Retin-A to absorb first without any other product interfering it. The absorption is very fast for rx retinoid BTW. So it's good.

And you're right, PC 2% BHA Liquid, then Retin-A then the Night Cream. That would work.

How is it going btw with the Night Cream? Hopefully it's all positive and no breakouts. The Retin-A does help a lot. =)

Hi

Thank You, the thing with makari night cream is i am having occasional breakouts only on my right cheek bone, and 1 place on my left cheekbone, i am having repeated breakouts on the same spot again and again, so i just stopped applying the cream there...but other wise Makari is the best available lightener right now in my opinion.

How is dermaline white XL working...i know its expensive but if it's worth i am willing to invest on it cuz i think it will last for a couple of years if we go by the details given their website.

Thanks.

Hi!

I'm really glad you did a post about Makari for non-acne prone people, since you recommended Makari for me earlier (I mentioned that I had resilient skin). I'm quite excited to try it, but I have read a lot of reviews on how while Makari whitens very well, once they went off it, their skin became even darker than original. I don't believe this to be the case, as I think their skin simply reverted back to their original color (like you did), but I am worried by how dependent I may be on this cream. Will I have to keep on the cream forever (dramatic, I know) in order to keep the light color? I'm also very interested in the Paul & Joe Whitening Serum, so maybe even if that's a less intense whitener, it'll provide longer lasting lightened skin (meaning, the results will be more permanent after I stop using them).

Thank you so much for all you've done, your blog is what I refer to and think is most reliable whenever I look for information on my skin!

Hi,

I don't personally use the Dermaline White XL, but I have gotten so many messages about it. It's a potent product, much like Makari and a few people tell me it works even better than Makari Night Cream. There is no doubt it is an effective skin lightening, it's the price that's a little outrageous.

But if you can make it economical (not use so much of it at each application) there is a huge return on investment with it since you will get lighter with it.

A BHA may help though with the breakouts. Perhaps your skin needs that extra pore exfoliation that BHA can give to help with those pesky spots. In the meantime, applying around it is a great idea. ;)

Oh thank you so much for using my blog as a tool to help you build a good skin regimen. That means a lot ;)

Skin lighteners are just like acne treatments, or sunscreen. There has to be some maintained usage to continue to reap the benefits. Once you stop using sunscreen, you are being exposed to sun damage. Once you stop using an acne treatment that worked for you, you might start breaking out again.

That is how I view skin lightening. That's why I've learned to love my skin lightening regimen and the products that I use.

If you are lightening up some sun damage, the results of a skin lightener can be permanent in that case, granted if you are using sunscreen everyday to protect your results.

But if you are lightening beyond your natural birth color, some maintenance is required. It only makes sense. I know many people who have reached their goal skin tone and they maintain by applying their lightener only 3x a week and sunscreen everyday.

The skin needs some exposure to a lightener at least 2-3x a week once you reach the desired skin tone. It's just how the melanocytes work, but sunscreen does play a huge role in that.

The Makari is stronger and probably will get you where you want to be faster, but the P&J Whitening Serum is more gradual but still very effective at lightening skin.

More mild lighteners probably will have less of a rebound effect than a stronger one since the melanin load in your skin is slowly decreasing instead of rapidly decreasing.

The Paul & Joe Whitening Serum has a lot less risks, meaning it is perfect for all skin types.

;)

what is the best course for lightening the body

June 13, 2010 at 3:33 PM
Blogger Mileena said...

Same thing as the face:

exfoliation (gentle and consistent)
protection (sunscreen if on areas exposed)
treatment (body lightening lotion).

For exfoliation, you can use a luffa with your regular body wash/soap to get a kick of exfoliation into your daily shower to help slough off dead skin cells that have higher melanin load.

Sunscreen sprays are convenient ways to protect your skin since the application is easy to do.

And using a body lightener like makari body beautifying milk.

=)

Wow, i wonder where i could get makari :( (i dont believe online shops) :p My... i guess makari should add another series for acne-prone skin but if its so effective why do people not feel the same thing? (again, bcoz its not in the for-all-of-us formula, stupid).

I still wonder... flawless white has VAO-B3 not VOA-B3 :D It is vit.E, allantoin, and optics-powered niacinamide. I guess bcoz maybe its 'another version' of niacinamide (even i dunno how to spell niacinamide :D), the percentage is 3% (its really 3% teehee :)) but its kinda annoying bcoz on d commercials -the model is beautiful, shi*!- it is like this:
-----
The setting is like in the yoga class
Model 1: "Wahhh, you're fairer!"
Model 2: (Wondering) "It is indeed whiter, but the dark spots still remain..."

Yoga time
Model 1: "Sit here, wazzup?"
Model 2: "No..."

Model 1 goes to the bathroom with model 2

"Not all of the lighteners on the market could lighten your dark spots except ponds flawless white!"

Model 2 tries flawless white and the voice-over explains the product
Model 2 is fairer, all the silly darky are gone, and a boy near her in d yoga class has a crush on her! Weewwww what a commercial!
-----

Im kinda down :(

----------------------------

Actually its really hard to distinguish brightener and lightener products on d market here! The word light, bright, and white are so different. Almost all the products use the word 'cerah' (bright) 'pencerah' (brightener) 'mencerahkan' (brightening) it always confuses me since cerah could be said as light and bright. While 'putih' is white and the Indonesian word 'pemutih' means more like bleacher not whitener in Indonesians's brain.

Its unclear bcoz they always translate the word like whitener as pencerah but we all know that cerah means bright on the dictionary. Help me!!! Indonesian is really easy to learn since it is a modern Malay but i just cant help it when it comes to the inappropriate usage of Indonesian :) (ooh the language is getting higher-cant reach it :D :D)

Don't get down Randy! Though I advocate safe skin lightening it's a choice not something everyone needs or should do.

Commercials like that are horribly marketed and play into the negative side of skin lightening. It's to enhance beauty that's all.

Different companies market their products different ways but mean the same thing. I've heard of of brighteners (Exuviance for example) which are more like skin lighteners IMO.

Forget about what the product states, look at the ingredients and you will see what seperates a brightener from a lightener.

Brighterers are vitamin c serums, niacinamide and copper peptides.

Lighteners have botanical plant extracts, or bleaching agents

It can lighten overall complexion, if your overall complexion is sun damaged. Niacinamide can correct sun damage. Many people have darker skin on their face and neck in comparison to their body. Niacinamide can help in evening that problem out, at 5% that is.

What would you suggest adding to my routine if I'm not seeing the results I want with my current regimen?

I currently use:
Morning: Wash with Olay Sensitive Skin Foaming Wash
A few drops of Phyto +
Sofina Perfect Lucent UV sunscreen

Evening:
Wash with DHC cleansing oil, then Olay Foaming Wash or Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash
A few drops of Phyto +
.025% Retin A Gel by Ortho

As you can see above I was finally able to see my doctor and get the Retin A manufactured by Ortho. I like it a lot better than the .025 Retin A cream I was using. The problem is I still break out and therefore am getting new scars every week before the old scars are even gone. What would you recommend to add to or replace the Phyto + that is stronger but still gentle enough for acne prone skin? I was thinking of DDF Intensive Holistic Lightener, but I read your review and you didn't get any results from that even though others have. I also have the Neostrata HG lightening gel for the scar on my arm but it is very sticky and I feel like it would definitely break me out. Any suggestions?

Hi Jess!

So you got the Retin-A afterall. Awesome!

How far along are in using the Retin-A? If you are breaking out, it could be from purging. The first 2 weeks of Retin-A usage brings comedones, trapped sebum and keratinocytes up to the surface layer of the skin which causes breakouts. They should subside. If it's been more than 2 weeks, then it might be something in your regimen that is breaking you out. Retin-A is supposed to treat acne, so something is in your routine that isn't going well with your skin.

Were you acne prone before this regimen?

Phyto+ is a mild lightener, it doesn't lighten in intensive way like others out there but I like it so much since it's soothing and it doesn't break me out/or irritate my skin. It takes time to work.

An alternative to it, if you want to bump up in strength could be the UNT EX White 2 with 2% tranexamic acid and licorice extract. It's similar to Phyto+ in that it's a botanical lightener and it's cheaper. I love LOVE the UNT Brightening Fluid and I heard some great things about the EX White 2 so it's definitley a great alternative. I suggest finishing up the Phyto + before getting the UNT though. It's a very good product, just takes some time.

Has the scar on your arm faded? the HQ lightening gel by Neostrata can be used on localized spots on your face, it shouldn't break you out but I would suggest (if you want to try it out) it at night only. Don't wear in the daytime.

=)

Thank you so much! To answer your question, I am in my 4th month of using Retin A. The first tube was the one I bought at MedsMex and it was 0.01%. I used that for 3 months and then ordered a tube of .025% Retin A cream, also from MedsMex. I found it really greasy and I know it has that comodogenic ingredient in it so I only used it a few times a week. Then I switched to the 0.25% gel and have been using that for almost two weeks. The only makeup I use is Almay Clear Complexion Concealer(on my scars) and it has 0.5 salicylic acid in it. I have heard some people don't have significant results from Retin A until 6 months, so I may be one of those unlucky people. I will say that I don't break out in as large numbers as I used to, and when I do the pimples go away quicker so it has had some positive effect.

The scar on my arm is much lighter at times, and at times darker. It has reduced in size though. I admit I am not as strict in my daily treatment of it, as I am with my face/Retin A. I do remember to cover it with sunscreen when I have it exposed :) I should probably bump up the application to twice a day though. I will try the gel on small spots on my face and see how it works.

I am definitely going to look into the UNT product you mentioned. I am down to my last vial of Phyto +(I bought a sample set of 6 on Ebay,) and I will probably buy more when I'm done. Is it possible for Phyto + to have an expiration date I wonder? I always worry about that when I purchase beauty products on Ebay.

Thank you so much for the advice, your blog is amazing. I just used the aspirin/yogurt mask you posted about and it's great and makes my skin SO soft. I also love the Sofina sunscreen. So much great advice here :)

That's great that some of the dark patches are fading! woo! Hopefully it continues to clear up. Like Retin-A, BHA can cause purging of the comedones in the skin so the breakouts you are seeing can be from them.

You're right, stick it out and things will get better. =)

Thanks! Now I just thought of something else. As soon I finish putting on the Makari I take some stridex pads and wipe ONLY the acne bumps then put on some bye bye blemish or Proactiv Mask only on the acne areas. So at night its pretty much like "Retin A 0.25 with Clindamycin 1.2, then Makari Night cream, wipe acne bumps with bha pads, then apply some type of acne product on only bumps like proactiv mask. So this pretty much gets rid of the acne and prevents it from growing in that prone area. When I read the ingredients of the Makari I was like OMG! I would never even think of using this on my face! But since it lightens I guess thats the only reason im using it lol. Ill be sure to send you pictures when I start seeing results!

Today my acne seems almost gone! Things are going well I got a little burnt/irritation on my chin area from a deplitory yesterday but it seems to be healing. As for lightening its been a week nothing yet. Probably because my skin is light. Ive notice it takes longer for skin lightening products to work if someone is naturally really light or naturally really dark. I think im going to see results next week or the week after. A while back I used Bio Claire people were saying it lightens in a week. 1 week later my skin was the same I was disapointed and thought it wouldnt work for me. After 3 or 4 weeks someone in my class mentioned how my skin looks paler. But that was the day I had to stop using it because It caused big big acne bumps on me. Plus its a steriod not good for the face!!

It takes time, I personally only make judgements by week 4 of usage. Any visible change means (no matter how minimal) something is working.

Hope it works out =)

UPDATE

Sorry it took so long to make an update. As of now I offically stopped using this Makari Night Cream Garbage. It did NOTHING for me. I dont think the RA even helped! i still got tiny pimples all over my face! This cream gave me sooo many blackheads and I lightened NOT 1 shade. I Actually think I appeared darker or red/orangeish. When I stopped using it I just was so p*ssed about wasting that much money on that stuff. I went into CVS and picked up some ambi fade cream. In a few weeks my skin was one color and glowing! It got rid of those discolorations

I'm sorry that your experience with Makari wasn't good. It sounds pretty bad, but that is awesome in the end you found something that works for your skin. Woo!!! I'm glad it's local for you too.

Getting rid of hyperpigmentation is tough, so if the Ambi Fade Cream can do that - that is amazing. I'm happy for you! <333

Thanks! It cleared up the PIH BUT I stop using it after it did that so It didnt really lighten me it jsut evened out my complexion to about one color. Which is good. Im also going to be looking through your blog for something that will lighten me. I seriously spent $100's and 100's and still never ever found a product that will work on my face its so sad ):. I wasted $100 on F&f 5x all it did was make my skin red and break out in rash! G&G gave me blackheads and made my face darker weird :/. Neorpsone (steriod) didnt work. The only thing I can think of that could have worked was Bio Claire but that was weird the way it did work. People said they saw results within a week but me it look almost a month but the day someone told me a looked pale (yay!) I had to stop big time I had HUGE HUGE puss pilled zits on my face!! ):. Everyhing I do seems to irriate my face!! it always turns red/dark!! Im cursed!! i could use it on my body with no problem but with my face NOTHING!! I even waste 100 more dollars on gluthione scam!! HQ and me dont really work that well that usually ends up turning me irriated too the ambi was an exception though. My face just wont lighten!! I always end up with a burnt darker red face! Please help me!!!
