Breaking Out Of A Skin Lightening Plateau

A plateau in skin lightening is when you have reached a certain shade or look from skin lighteners or skin brighteners, and no matter how much you try to enhance the efficacy of the lightener or your regimen - your skin tone remains the same.

Now being in a stagnant spot in skin lightening is often times intentional. For example, in my case, I am pretty much at a point where my skin tone is at my goal, and the products I use do not make drastic changes. They work definitley since they are maintaining my complexion, but they don't break that plateau. And I am fine with this, since at this time I don't desire to go any lighter 'in shades'.

The main point of this article is not for people who are intentionally in a stable spot in skin lightening. Breaking out of a stagnant skin lightening state is done by re-examining your regimen and replacing products within your regimen. The first place to start is always with sunscreen. I feel like I cannot express the significance of this point completley, but the higher the PPD of a sunscreen, the less chance of tanning, darkening or re-pigmentation is to occur.

PPD (persistent pigment darkening) plays a huge role in breaking out of a skin lightening rut. If you find your acne marks constantly going darker, your skin tone constantly tanning or the pigmentation issues you are having now remain the same - bumping up to a higher PPD sunscreen will drastically change things. Trust me, it doesn't sound like much but switching from a moderate PPD level (PPD of 8-12) sunscreen to a higher level PPD sunscreen may be the extra push you need.  UVA/UVB damage is something you need to minimize as much as possible.

If you are following the tips that I have mentioned throughout the blog about increasing the efficacy of your lightener, and still aren't getting the results you want - perhaps it's time to look elsewhere. I usually give a product 4-6 weeks, but by the 4th week I should see some change (no matter how minimal it is). A stronger skin lightener can be the answer in finally fading those stubborn acne marks, or freckles or get you one shade lighter. Trust me, I've gone through many skin lighteners and found  there are lots of strong products out there that can break you out of a plateau.

The main reason I started the Featured Ingredients section earlier this year was to spotlight on common, effective skin lightening ingredients and help people select products with these ingredients in them. Certain ingredients work better than others. It's all subjective, but the only way to know is to try. I've learned over the years my skin responds very well to bearberry extract, mulberry extract, kojic acid, niacinamide, arbutin and rumex extract. Sepiwhite, licorice extract and many others don't do much for me. This is something I've learned by trying products with these ingredients.

It's a fact every skin lightener has a threshold. Depending on it's strength of active ingredients, it can only lighten so much. Eventually you will hit the lighest that particular product can make you and it will remain (granted that you are maintaining usage of it and protecting your skin with sunscreen daily). If you want to change things up and go further in your pigmentation goals, look for something stronger. Perhaps a lightener with similar ingredients but a stronger potency. The best way to find is by either contacting the company directly for this information or seeing where the ingredient lies within the ingredient list as a whole. The higher to the top it is, the more concentrated it is.

Ooops, a little bit of review is okay right? Its from http://twinsouls888.blogspot.com/2010/01/olay-white-radiance-intensive-whitening.html

LIKES:

► I find the packaging ideal for travel since it’s small and fits my bag perfectly.
► I really like the smell. It has a sweet pleasant smell.
►The price is affordable in my opinion. The price in ebay is Php 800.00 ( around 17 USD) including shipping for a 75ml bottle. The 30ml bottle is around Php 300.00 (around 6.5 USD) (So sorry I forgot to ask my sister bout the exact price my bad, I’ll just update this part after I talked to her.)
►It has SPF 24, protects the skin from harmful UVA UVB rays.
►I find it a good moisturizer. Gives me soft supple skin.

DISLIKES:

►It has a greasy after feel immediately after application.
►When I use this as my night moisturizer, I woke up with an oily face . Well, a very oily face.
►After applying this moisturizer in the morning, I discovered that I need to blot more. An hour after my mineral makeup application, it’s a must for me to blot and retouch otherwise, I’ll have an oil mine face yikes. You can almost use my face as a mirror because of the shine yay!!
►I thought my skin is A ok already when it comes to sensitivity so I used this cream also on the parts of my face that tends to be really oily, my nose, my forehead and my chin area. I tried using it for three whole days and I got breakouts yay! And I mean really terrible breakouts, lots of huge cystic acne on my forehead sob. I suffered the consequences even during New Years Eve and a week after NYE. This is what’s causing my terrible break outs.

[Too bad, she gave 1 out of 5! Thats absolutely bad!!!]

Great, detailed review I must say.

It's probably just too moisturizing, more ideal for drier skin types or colder weather when skin is dry. I don't like using hydrating products in summer either.

Looking at the ingredients, the main source of lightening is coming solely from the niacinamide. The LACRYMA-JOBI MA-YUEN SEED EXTRACT is way too low on the ingredient list, as is the MORUS ALBA ROOT EXTRACT (antioxidant).

Breakouts are a sure way for me to let go of a product. No point in putting up with it if it's causing an oily face or breakouts.

Have you heard of Fairever fairness cream? I think it's in the same league as this Olay White Radiance in that it's a fairness cream/mild skin lightener. It looks like a good alternative to me, and I've gotten a few messages from users saying it worked for them.

I missed your comments Randy. Thanks for stopping by <3

Hi Mileena,

I 've using Retin a for my acne from last 10 months i still get small white head type acne everyday . And also use sofina sunscreen in the morning everyday from last two months. Do you think sunscreen could be the reason. And iuse cleansing oil to remove sunsreen at night. I was using La roche posay fluide 50+ before and same thing was before.Thank you

It could be Sofina, everybody's skin is different.

Sunscreen can be clogging on some people. I find this to be the most difficult thing to find and like in a regimen. What ingredients are similar from the Sofina and the La roche posay fluide 50+? Sofina has octinoxate and zinc oxide - if the lRP has one of these ingredients perhaps it's one of these two that are clogging you.

Making sure to remove the Sofina completley is important, using a cleansing oil and then following up with a foaming cleanser is crucial in keeping your face completley clean.

Sunscreen is so important, and I can't believe how many people only think it's necessary when going to the beach or something like that. I regularly use sun screen, even on overcast days. Aside from that I've used some skin lightening creams and even tried some home remedies. Sun damage can definitely cause age spots, and skin-whitening creams are a good way to go for lightening their appearance. This is a great article!

Hi, before I start, I want to say that I love your blog to bits~

I have some questions about Diana stalder/ Dermaline products.

I plan on purchase the Diane Stalder lighteing cream and kojic papaya soap. In MAC coloring, Im an NC 45, I use to be NC 20. I've been through years on sun damage (about 10 years) The seller of skin-whitening-product.com says that I would see dramatic results with 1 month, would 1-2 months be realistic in restoring my natural color (if using everyday)? I have oily non-sensative skin. I do plan on wearing alot of sunscreen and staying indoors alot also.

also, do you find that their products keep pores clean too? I wanted to use BHA and vita c too, but Im scared the lightening cream, BHA and vita c would be too much to handle. should I lighten first then when I maintain with using creams 2-3x a week, incorporate BHA and vita c?

sorry it's so long~ thank you~

Hi Yoonji,

From what I've heard about the Dermaline range, it's pretty strong and quite effective. A few readers have e-mailed me their progress pics and told me how the XL Whitening Cream has got them to their goal skin tone (wiping out sun damage).

I haven' tried it myself, but I am interested in posting the full ingredients here. I just e-mailed them for this info so hopefully I can do that.

Some visible change should be seen by week 4 (regardless of how much you are consistently/gently exfoliating). But for full results it usually can be 2-6 months. It depends on the person and how well their skin responds to that lightener. The Dermaline is similar in strength to Makari products, so I'm guess a month or two should yield significant skin lightening.

Since it is kind of a potent lightener, I would lay off in introducing vitamin c now. You can definitley add in a BHA product like Stridex pads (as a toner) or Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid or even a weekly aspirin/yogurt mask just to keep your skin exfoliated and your pores clear (which leads to better skin lightening since it will penetrate deeper).
