SPF/UV Protective Clothing & Hats

We've all seen those ladies around our neighborhood or city - the ones that carry around umbrellas during summertime. While using an umbrella is a good way to shield your skin from direct sun light, it can draw a lot of unnecessary attention. I don't have a problem with using it, or people who do use it, it's just that there are other ways to maximize your efforts in preventing sun damage without holding an umbrella over your head.

SPF clothing or UV protective clothing has been around for a long time. If it wasn't for this blog encouraging me to research on all aspects of skin lightening and sun protection I would not of stumbled upon such great resources and websites offering good quality, convenient UV protective clothing.

SPF/UV protective clothing is made of a combination of fabric/weaves that offer UVA and UVB protection (Ultraviolet Protection Factor). It's protection value has been approved and supported by many dermatologists and proves to be a valid form of sun screen.

A lot of people don't realize that covering up is not enough to prevent sun damage. UVA/UVB rays can penetrate fabrics as well and cause damage. Granted, wearing a long sleeve instead of a t-shirt does dramatically reduce the chances of developing a sun tan or further darkening of freckles, it still doesn't block it out completley. Nothing really can quite honestly, but SPF/UV clothing is a step closer to getting full protection.

The great thing about wearing SPF clothing is that their designed to keep you much more cool in comparison to if you were wearing just a regular long sleeve shirt or full length pant. Also there is no risk of destabilization or protectiong 'wearing' off or sweating off. Still, I would highly recommend wearing sunscreen on any exposed area if you are going to be out in the sun for a long time, whether or not you are wearing SPF clothing or not.

Browsing the plethora of websites that offer UV protective clothing, I became interested in the hats and swim wear. I'm a hat girl, and I think in the summer time wearing a nice hat can really make things not only look fashionable but also skin protective. Nowadays more and more people are being more cautious about sun damage not only for themselves but their children and fortunatley wearing these UV protective garments can help.

Most sporting good stores carry SPF clothing and wide brimmed hats with UV protection. The hats are fantastic IMO, I recommend checking out these online catalogues and links if you are interested in purchasing UV protective clothing or hats to protect your skin from the strong summer sun:

I love Solumbra products - I daily wear a Solumbra hat and long sleeved shirt. I have traveled to the tropics and avoided tanning due to covering up.

Another great resource is www.spfstore.com. They have great t-shirts that are very reasonable in price and have spf's of 50+. This company is in the US.
