Etude House O2 White Mask Pack - Instant Skin Whitening Effect

Note: I just recieved a comment from someone who can read the ingredient list in its original Korean text that this mask is hydrogen peroxide based. I had absolutley no idea this mask contained this, no where on the official Etude House USA website does it state that. I should have known that the O2 complex is basically just hydrogen peroxide *slaps forehead*. No recommendation on this one.

For those looking for an instant skin lightening treatment, the Korean brand Etude has created a product just for this. When I mean instant skin lightening, I mean it when it comes to the Etude House O2 White Mask Pack. This is a fairly popular Korean skin lightening mask that instantly creates a dramatic skin lightening effect after 5 minutes.

I must say I am a little perplexed at how all this works.

According to Etude, the O2 White Mask Pack is formulated to powerfully whiten and revitalize skin for a healthy looking, glowing appearance.

The directions are as clear and easy as can be. You apply the mask on cleansed, dry, bare skin. Leave it on for about 5 minutes (it begins a foaming action a few minutes in) and you rinse off with warm water, then cool water and pat dry.

Cue an instant skin whitening effect.

The active ingredients are the O2 Carrier Complex and Gigawhite. I'm guessing the Gigawhite is at the right concentration - 5% which results in skin lightening.

This is an instant or temporary mask. The skin lightening effect is most likely from an intense antioxidant surge as well as thorough cleansing. Removing oxidized sebum off the face can make a huge difference in the skin tone. I discussed this in Oxidation & Skin Lightening  It can also be a film left behind, but judging from what people say in reviews, it doesn't leave any residue behind and leaves their skin silky smooth.

Company claims are one thing, real results from real people is what I am more interested in. So, I decided to search on the net and found several reviews of this mask. I must admit, I was pretty shocked at the dramatic before and after photos. Here is a link from another blog where this girl applied the mask to her hands. The skin lightening that occurs in that region in contrast to the untreated skin is pretty astounding! For a temporary product, I must say it's pretty incredible!

There are many others out there.

I wish I knew what the full ingredients were. I cannot read Korean. If anyone can read/translate Korean, please let me know! This mask is incredibly fascinating and great for special events or if you want to have a radiant appearance for an evening.

It comes in a 100ml jar, creamy consistency and can be found through several online vendors (ebay etc.). The official North American link is here: http://www.etudehouseusa.com/catalog.php?item=42

It's a hydrogen peroxide mask. Didn't you warn against that in the past? I read the ingreds list when I was in Korea...

It is? I definitley will take the recommendation off it then. Oxidation products are definitley something I don't advocate to use for lightening. I had no idea it was an HP mask, the official site doesn't state that at all.

Thank you for letting me know. =)

Hi Nitesh!

I sometimes get re-flaking and stuff. A lot of times, you just need to slow down or buffer the retinoid with a bland moisturizer or serum.

Taper off to every other night using it for a week. See how that works. Moisturize your dry flaky spots with a good moisturizer (there are tons out there really). Retinoids while are incredibly beneficial, are tough stuff and if you are getting flakies, that means your skin is just overly dry.

Also, a mild manual scrub used a couple of times a week should help. Dermabrasion does a great job. Once the flakes subside from every other night usage (if you still don't find relief with this, buffer it with a moisturizer).

=)

Sorry Randy! I know, I should have asked directly for your input.

Actually from the link to the girl who used it, she posted a pic of the actual jar and nowhere on it was hydrogen peroxide stated, simply gigawhite (which got me excited since it's a great lightening ingredient) and O2 complex.

Grrr next time I stumble across another one of these, I'll make sure to ask you. I'll say in the POST itself, "Randy help me translate this!'

XD!

Purging doesn't happen for everyone. If you were acne prone before (meaning you got pimples prior) then your chances of going through a mild purge is higher.

The purging is not a myth, it's a result of exfoliation. Trapped sebum and comedones rise to the surface when the epidermal layer is sloughed off. These become pimples. They need to come out anyway so it's a good thing.

If you aren't acne prone, you most likely won't get any purging.

Niacinamide can help a lot at 5% or higher. Many things can be used to help lessen the severity of the initial breakouts. I like BHA. Niacinamide is a great choice too ;)

How is it exactly that you can make a product recommendation without actually trying the product?

All the product recs are done based on ingredients. With this particular product, I did not know the full ingredients since the official site was not in English.

For most I post the full ingredients and go by that. If I believe in a product, it's determined by 2 factors: the active ingredients (and even better their percentages) and other reviews/commentary I find online.

Whats wrong with it being a hydrogen peroxide based?

Nothing is drastically wrong with a hydrogen peroxide based product, I just never knew that was the active ingredient.

Hydrogen Peroxide does have skin bleaching effects that are strong and instantaneous but it's not the healthiest 'skin care' treatment out there. It's very similar to Benzoyl Peroxide in that they are both effective in their respective ways but promote oxidation (which increases free radical damage to skin cells) in the long run. As a mask I still think it's fine since it's not left on the skin for a long period of time. Only when used as a leave on treatment daily does HP become negative.

anyone know any good skin lightening products which is safe? are any DHC products good

Everything I blog about on here is safe.

DHC products are excellent. They do have a separate whitening line (Asian) but their Acerola line is amazing. Check it out, it gives my skin a glow.

No such Hydrogen Peroxide in the list in Korean and this is what I actually have looked. The said mask has Arbutin as well in the ahead of many ingredients in the list. The 'O2 carrier complex' may sound pretty hazy but In Korea, Benzoyl Peroxide is a prohibited ingredient when using in skin care product and it's true. So I don't think HP would be allowed when BP is not.

Thank you for letting me know this! =) A previous commenter mentioned that it contains HP so I made that little note. Hmmm...I'm not too sure I wish I could get the full ingredient list so I could post it on here.

I didn't know BP was prohibited in the Korean market.
