Skin Lightening Myth: Aloe Vera

If you search for natural skin lightening remedies, chances are you will stumble across a couple dozen sites claiming that aloe vera can lighten skin. Typically, 100% pure aloe vera gel or a jelly is what is recommended.

Aloe vera has some great skin benefits. It is soothing, and treats a variety of skin ailments: seborrheic dermatitis, inflammation, mild wounds etc. It also has been proven to have anti-microbial and anti fungal properties. What it doesn't have is the ability to inhibit melanin.

Most of the statements out there that support aloe vera as a skin lightening agent claim aloe vera acts as a sunscreen (absorbs UV light). Unfortunatley that is is untrue. There are numerous studies on aloe vera out there that prove this to be false.

Aloe vera has no effect on UVA or UVB rays, nor does it have a skin lightening effect.

I do however enjoy using aloe vera based products since I find them to be really good anti-inflammatory treatments. For the longest time I loved the Aloette Enzyme Peel. Possibly the best enzyme peel out there (non acid based peel).
