Random Thoughts on Skin Lightening: A Realistic View

Here are just some thoughts running through my head from answering some e-mails…

- Skin Lightening is smart work not hard work.

- Skin lightening shouldn't drain your finances. Investing in the look and health of your skin is one thing, but spending money when you don't have any to splurge, or when it should be spent on something more important is harmful.

- Skin lightening beyond your natural skin tone is a lifetime maintenance

- Skin lightening will not solve all your problems

- Give a product time to work. Stopping after 2 days is ridiculous. Give it at least 4 weeks. If breakouts (and I don't mean purging) or adverse reactions begin - discontinue immediately.

- If you find yourself getting frustrated or discouraged, stop and re-evaluate your skin lightening goals. Are they really realistic or attainable? Are you expecting too much in very little time? It took me almost 6 years to get completely even skin and fade intense sun damage on my face and neck. It's varies from person to person, but the point is: there is no rush!

- When you find that a product is working really well on your skin, understand that the particular active ingredients in there respond well with your skin. If in any unfortunate event that product gets discontinued, look for other products that have those active ingredients.

- If you feel you are doing too much by layering too many products on your face, chances are you are doing too much and active ingredients are conflicting with one another. Or even worse, not being absorbed fully.

- When your skin starts to even out and stubborn pigmentation starts to lighten - it is a wonderful feeling =D

- When you finally get a good regimen down, just keep on trucking.

- Whether you get rebound hyperpigmentation or just can't seem to find anything that works, in the end you still got your greatest asset - YOU. Having your skin at your desired complexion is one thing, but it shouldn't define you. Don't get down yourself over skin lightening.

Love, love your blog. Thank you. I am a bit confused about shades. What make a shade and how does one know what 3 or 4 shades are? Also you said it took you 6 years where were you on the Fitz Scale then and where are you now?

Measure it, neen! Ahh about d grades, i guess we can only assume. If we were in d coffee shade then overtime we feel we are in d coffee milk shade, guess how many shades u've achieved! But again, im still confused about undertone. See, we couldnt lighten d color til pass d undertone. Mine is a not-cool-but-cool :D theres a post about undertone, just search. But! Mileena wrote dat checking d undertone is easy―see under d strong light. Now, under d strong light, ppl's skin will be white!! Even coffee shade will be milk chocolate. Which light did u mean, mileena?

Natural daylight. So...near a window you can see your undertones and all the pigments running through your skin.

Also for me, undertones are easy to see judging by colors. If you are warm toned, colors like orange, brown, red, white look great and emphasize it. If you are cool skinned, purple, dark blue and those colors will really compliment your undertones.

Yes, 1pm is a good time. Also before noon, so 9-10 am is good as well since the sun isn't as high so it's not so strong and blaring. You can get a better look of things when the light is just natural. Your undertones do illuminate through. Observe the colors running through your skin (if you see yellow, darkish red, brown then you are warm and light pink, light bluish tones if cool).
