Skin Lightening Myth: Saffron

According to Ayurvedic medicine and skin care, saffron is one of the most effective skin lightening agents out there. Ayurvedic medicine and skin care intrigues me, as does many of the plant extracts found in Chinese and Japanese skin lightening products. I decided to look into this ingredient and see if the claims hold any truth.

Saffron actually has strong antioxidant abilities. I stumbled across numerous studies showing how it can have an array of health benefits. Skin wise I couldn’t find much.

The main antioxidants in saffron are Crocetin, Zeaxanthin and lycopene. Topically these can’t do much for the skin, especially in interfering with melanin synthesis.

Only a few antioxidants can actually be effective topically, and those are vitamin c, botanical extracts vitamin e, ferulic acid and green tea extract.

In India Saffron is regarded to be one of the best skin lighteners ( the purest form that we get in the valley kashmir), pregnant women consume milk blended with Saffron , an age old recipe that's still in practice.

It is advised to be used with milk either orally or as an application on the skin....may it works in synergy with milk.

Hi Mileena
Really informative post. Do lycopene base product helps in getting permanent pink hue or not?
Also like to know wat is pearl extract. Do it helps in lightening or just a myth

Hey Nitesh,

No, lycopene based products do not produce pink hues in the skin. Lycopene topically doesn't do much at all even for antioxidant protection.

Consumed it can have lots of benefits.

Pearl extract is another myth as well =P

When consumed, saffron has a host of health benefits like promoting circulation and anti-cancer abilities due to the antioixdant content. I found many sites and hubs of information stating that with a glass of milk it can be very beneficial.

Good health ultimately leads to good skin. Most of these skin lightening myth posts I do on here are determined true or false by actual scientific evidence. There isn't any out there for saffron, but who knows - perhaps it hasn't been investigated?

Consuming with a glass of milk sounds delicious and worth a shot. You probably have to drink this on a conistent basis in order to see any potential for skin change ;)
