Re-examining & Understanding Skin Lightening

This should have been my first post on this blog, I don't understand what I was thinking not mentioning this before. Suffice to say it's long overdue and I am going to talk about it now. I am going to make this real short (lol...we'll see how that goes by the end of this blog post).

Skin lightening is a multi-faceted issue - it's not just about lightening your overall skin tone (though that is generally the most common objective). There are people who just wish to fade acne marks or dark spots, melasma or just desire an even, glowing skin tone. Whatever it may be, there are certain things you need to understand so this whole process will actually start making real sense to you.

If you have sun damage or any kind of external damage that you did not genetically inherit (be it a deep set tan (your face and neck is darker than your body or vice versa), freckles, dark spots from an injury, hyperpigmentation) you can permanantley lighten and reverse that. Yes, you can. I will repeat that:

You can permanatley lighten any pigmentation issue that is from UV induced damage or anything that is non-genetic.

Now, let's flip the coin since many of us here are in this boat: If you want to lighten the color of your skin up in shades, beyond your natural skin color - that is possible. HOWEVER, that requires the use of natural skin lighteners for life and maintenace. Don't get it twisted, you still need maintenance to fade UV-induced pigmentation conerns as well. But I feel there is a misconception with people assuming skin lightening equating to a quick fix.

Think about it for a second. If you use a medication or a supplement for a condition - when you stop using it, you stop reaping the benefits. Same thing for lightening your skin beyond your natural skin tone. It must be used for life to preserve that color.

So...let me just summarize this.

If you have a pigmentation issue that isn't something you were born with, you can permanatley lighten that with an effective skin lightening product. To maintain the results - you must use sunscreen.

If you have a pigmentation goal involving lightening your skin lightening up in shades past your original tone, than that requires life long use of natural products, and ofcourse sunscreen.

...now why didn't I state this before? XD

Hey Bency!

Thanks for the kind comments. I wish I was a skin care expert or derm, I might do that later on. Gotta finish this nursing thing first lol. I got some plans regarding writing a book soon though. We'll see how that goes though. =P

Yeah the DDF Brightening Cleanser can be a bit drying, but not more than any other foaming cleansers IMO. Most of the dryness comes from the alpha hydroxy acids in there that exfoliate the skin.

It's still very gentle than most AHA cleansers/soaps out there. I use it primarily on my body, but in the summer time I can get away with using it on my face. My skin is oily, and the humidity of the summer just calls for it.

It's an amazing cleanser, honestly. It brightens up my skin instantly after every wash and I swear that some of my discolorations on my thigh area have disappeared from cumulate use of it.

I think for combination skin like yours it would be fine, especially during the summer It can definitley be used in the winter time (I use it now everyday in my shower). If you use a serum or moisturizer, you can apply that on your dry spots if you get them. But to me I don't find it anymore drying than an ol' AHA or salicylic acid like cleanser. The results I get are great, it's great for acne too since it sloughs off dead cells and clears pores to an extent. ;)
